MENTAL RECESSION

Guest post by: Harry Kafka

Article Overview: Recession is created by us just like economic upturn. Essentially what the majority believe becomes the truth. The accounting industry cannot but follow where economy leads... but the individual accounting professional CAN and will influence the future of each of his/her clients. And the way to emerge victorious from this recession is by helping others to beat the downturn. This is how...

MENTAL RECESSION

Recession - not ONLY negative

The human mind is inclined to emotional thinking in far greater degree than any of us are willing to admit, really. With all our logical thinking, educational degrees and experience, how COULD we accept that we make decisions that are governed by... EMOTION?

But there it is. When we are negative, most everything is not the way it should be... and when the sun shines to our day, everything is bright, positive and full of promise.

Whether or not economy or a people CAN think in unison is beside the point really. All that matters is that if you treat it that way then your recession strategy WORKS far better than how the average practitioner fares through the downturn.

The first lesson of recession is... don’t believe all you hear. Realize that the media is there for one sole purpose... and it is NOT “giving you a balanced picture of the truth of the matter” but (and I’m sorry to be so brutal) to sell its wares.

Newspapers, television channel news, Internet sites... they’re all out to grab your attention and get you using their services. The old way of earning from this is to get subscription fees, as is the case with most dailies still. The new way is to sell advertising to those who want to reach YOU... and to get YOU to where those ads are displayed.

So DON’T believe all you hear. The old way of achieving attention is to bring scandalous or frightening news... and with everyone using the same technique, we get to more and more outrageous gags that pass for “serious news broadcasting.”

The second lesson is that just like in a bull market, we are always in a COMPETITIVE situation, also in recession.

Only here, a lot of our competitors “know” fully well “nothing can be done about it...” so they lie down, dig in to weather the storm.

In other words, they stop trying to obtain more clients, more business, increased revenues because... they know, see?

Cannot be done. Everyone says so, it’s all over the news, ain’t it???

So not trying, they’re not really even LOOKING. Not looking what YOU do, what your CLIENTS do.

And so we see that in recession, the biggest opportunities come not from the forever increasing spending of the market (as that diminishes, obviously) but on how the local businesses GIVE UP on trying to change their system to meet the NEW needs of their target group.

Witness the spectacular win of Barak Obama. He concentrated on the hot item, he found out how the sudden mid campaign economic downturn influenced the thinking of his “target group...” and he made history.

Of course one can find a whole host of issues that contributed, but it is equally obvious Mr Obama certainly knew what Americans felt they needed and wanted at the time.

He brought HOPE to the equation.

And that’s really all YOU have to do in your area to create interest for your accounting services and, most definitely, attract new business.

YOU be the beacon of positivity in your area. YOU offer your new clients ways to beat the recession, to acquire new gains while others give up... to emerge victorious and prosperous from the other end of this long dark tunnel of hopelessness we call recession.

You’ll enjoy your life a lot more, for one. And definitely will emerge very victorious from this recession, with the added bonus of knowing that you have helped your community by helping businesses to survive through recession!
