Good Bookkeeping To Secure Business Capital

Many observers agree that the global economy will create far more challenging situations than first anticipated.

We've seen leaders of the free world in a panic throwing money at major financial institutions in an effort to keep the cogs of capitalism turning.

As a small business owner, you may have had the experience of visiting your local Bank Manager to ask for a loan to expand your business.

Can you imagine the response if you said you had no idea how much you really need, or what effect the loan will have, and you certainly have no plan or forecast budget to say when or how you will repay this loan

Your chance of being approved a loan to expand your business would be next to none. Yet this seems to be the approach that Federal Governments are taking in the Western World in 2009.

As freelance bookkeepers we are often asked to get the bookwork upto date for small business owners. This often includes the preparation of Profit and Loss Reports and ensuring the balance sheet is correct, so that the small business owner can seek extra capital to develop their business.

When it comes to the Federal Government the situation is very different. 2009 has seen a monetary policy of a very different kind. How silly of us not to realize that in fact it’s a “money-tree” policy.

Many economists predict that the recession has a long way to go. If small business owners followed the example of these Federal Governments, you’ll be waiting a long time for those same governments to offer to throw money at your business to bail you out of financial difficulties.

When the going gets tough in the market place, it is so important that you have a handle on the financial position of your business. Where you had customers on 90 day or 60 day accounts, there’s a danger that those customers may not be around to settle those accounts.

When cash flow tightens up, you need a much tighter control on your business, and so you should ensure that you are getting regular reports from your bookkeeper. With less credit so freely available, and less demand for your goods and services, small business owners can quickly be forced to close their doors.

As the economy slows down, the and the Banks are under more pressure to exercise responsible lending practices, you need to have you paperwork in order, have a clear picture of how your business is progressing, and ensure that your budget forecasts are relevant in the current economic climate. Make sure that you have a system and routine of goodbookkeeping to secure your business growth.
