How Do I Market My Bookkeeping Business?
It's hard to know the best way to market any business. Different methods work for different business and areas. The trick is finding the right one for you that doesn't blow the budget.
First and foremost, you need to get some business cards printed. You can do this in either of three ways. You can print them yourself on your computer. Avery has business card paper that is compatible with Microsoft Word. These look good but over time, the ink may fade. The second ways is through Vista Print. They quite often have a deal, where you can get 250 business cards free. You only need to pay postage. These cards are slightly small than the average business card, are in a matt finish and you have a limited number of free designs to choose from. The third method is for those who have a couple of hundred dollars to spend. Getting your business cards professionally printed may cost a bit but in the end, I think it is worth it. They look good, they don't fade, and they put across a professional image.
Once you have your business cards you will have your logo that you can use to brand your business. Use the same logo on all printed advertising and stationery. With this in mind, it would be a good idea to print up some brochures that tell prospective clients exactly what you can do. These are easy enough to do yourself on your computer and you can get your business card printer to email your logo to you so that will save some time and effort. Your brochures can then be sent out to all the accountants in your area with a short note offering your services. Don't forget to pop a business card in the envelope with the brochure. People who don't require your services now may throw away your brochure but a business card will generally be put in with other business cards for future reference.
If you have money left in your advertising budget, you may also want to place an ad in the yellow pages phone directory or the trades and services section of your local newspaper. I'm not saying to place a huge ad in these as it would not be cost effective, but a text ad or small business card size ad should do the trick. If you choose the business card size, then you only need to use a copy of your business card. If you choose the text ad, make sure you have an attention-grabbing headline and a call to action. For example, save time and money call me now!
My last suggestion is to get yourself a website or blog. You can find web hosts that will host your site free, leaving just the domain name that will cost only a small amount. With a website or blog, you can put as much info as you like and keep it updated at all times. Don't forget to put you web address on your business card and any other printed stationery.
