Are you sick of working for someone else? Would you rather be working for yourself and making your own rules? If you are currently a bookkeeping employee, here is one way to start working for yourself.
Before you give up your current job, you need to work out where you are going to find clients for your business. When you are talking with these prospective clients, casually bring up the subject of bookkeeping. Tell them that you are thinking about starting your own business but haven't decided yet. Gauge their response to this and if you find you have a number of people interested, then you can take the next step.
The next step is telling your boss what you are thinking of doing. Now don't go weak at the knees, I'm sure he/she is not that scary. Besides, you're not going to tell him you are leaving; you're going to give him a proposition. All business owners like to hear of ways that they are going to save money and that's exactly what you are going to show him.
By now, you are probably wondering how you can save your boss money, stay working for your boss AND start your bookkeeping business. Well here's what you need to tell your boss. "You're paying me a lot to do day-to-day data entry. Why not hire a junior to do that and I will oversee her work." Tell your boss that you are thinking of starting a bookkeeping business. Let him know that you would still like to do his books but as a contractor instead of an employee. Let him know your hourly rate will be a little higher than what he is currently paying. Explain to him that he will save money with this arrangement, as he will not be paying employment expenses for you (eg. Super, Workers Compensation), you will be doing less hours and the junior he hires to do the data entry will be on a lower rate of pay than he is currently paying you.
You must be prepared for this meeting with your boss in two ways. Firstly, you must have all the facts and figures written down so he can see and understand what you are telling him. Secondly, be prepared for your boss to say no.
