What Goals Should I Set and What Plans Should I Make?

Many people are unsure of the goals they should set for both their personal life as well as for their business. This, in turn, makes it difficult to know what plans they should be making to reach their goals.

The first thing you should do in setting goals is to decide where you want to be in five years. Where would you like to be living? What sort of house would you like? What sort of car would you like to be driving? Do you want to be debt free? Would you like to have $10,000 or $20,000 or more in your bank account? Try to be realistic in what you want but you can also dram a little.

Once you have worked out where you would like to be in five years, thing about which of these things you may be able to achieve in four years, then three years, then two years and finally what you think you can achieve in the next twelve months.

Now that you have your yearly goals set, you can think about how you might achieve them. First, write down your one year goals. Those things that you would like to achieve in the next twelve months. Next, write down what you will need to do to achieve these goals. This is your plan for the next twelve months.

Now write down your goals for two years time. Under this, you will write down what you need to do after reaching your twelve-month goals in order to achieve your two-year goals. Continue this for the rest of your goals. What will you need to do after reaching your two-year goals in order to achieve your three-year goals etc?

Don't stress yourself if you are behind in reaching your goals. If you haven't reached your one-year goal in twelve months, it doesn't matter. Just keep going until you get there. Then you can happily start the next set of plans with the knowledge that, although it took a bit longer than expected, you still got there.

It is a major achievement in life to set yourself goals, plan on how to achieve those goals and to get there. What an accomplishment! You can feel proud that you are heading in the right direction to a happy and fulfilling life.

I mentioned earlier that people could have the same problems with goal setting and planning for their business. The method I have shown for personal goals can also be used for your business, although the questions for where you want to be in five years will be different. For a business, you would ask yourself where you want your business to be in five years. How much money do you want to be making each month? Where do you want your business to be located? How many employees do you want to have? What size building do you want for your business operations?

Most important of all, don't worry if things don't go exactly to plan. Plans can be changed. If something isn't working, it is useless to keep trying to make it work. Scrap it and try something else. You may even find that over the next five years, your goals may change or you may achieve a goal earlier than expected. Now that you have your goals and plans written down, all you need to do is adjust your plan to suit any changes that pop up.

Oh, and don't forget to cross things off on your plan once they are done and cross off your goals once they are achieved. This simple act of crossing things off will make you feel better about yourself and where you are going. It will also keep you motivated to continue with your plans.

This is your opportunity to make the most important decision you will ever make. Forget your past. Who are you now? Who have you decided you really are now? Don't think about who you have been. Who are you now? Who have you decided to become? Make this decision consciously. Make it carefully. Make it powerfully. regards, Mal.
