Article Overview: One of the fastest growing areas within the QuickBooks "eco-system" relates to add-on software.
QuickBooks does a number of things very well, some things moderately well, and others.... well, we won't even go there.
Read on for more insight on how add-ons allow you to retain your investment in QuickBooks for your accounting needs, AND get the functionality that QuickBooks can't provide.

What is a "QuickBooks Add-On"?
I wanted to take a moment and provide some additional insight to this question that pops up quite often when talking to existing QuickBooks users and those who are considering QuickBooks.
Put simply, a QuickBooks add-on is software that was created by a third-party company (not Intuit) that can connect with QuickBooks and add additional functionality in one or more areas.
AN EXAMPLE TO HELP CLARIFY...
If you have used QuickBooks for any length of time, you know that within the customer record, there are only 2 name fields and 2 phone number and e-mail fields. In addition, it is very difficult to do marketing campaigns to print mailing labels or create e-mails based on any product sales criteria without a lot of extra work.
For some businesses, these limitations are not a problem. For others, the limitations are a big problem. For those businesses, they often go in search of software that contains this additional functionality, but that business also is very interested in retaining the core accounting functionality of QuickBooks.
Enter the Intuit Marketplace for QuickBooks add-on software!
In our example, using the Intuit Marketplace, we can find several "add-on" software packages with extensive customer management features, such as Results CRM. The Intuit Marketplace allows you to search for add-on products by business need or by industry.
PRICING AND FEATURES WILL VARY
The goal of QuickBooks add-on software is to provide the functionality that a business needs but that is either limited or not available in QuickBooks.
The QuickBooks add-on software connects with QuickBooks where necessary to keep the information between the two programs in sync. Some connections are done manually, and others are more automated.
In addition, each company that sells QuickBooks add-on software has their own price lists, warranties, and technical support options that are outside of those offered by QuickBooks. There is no "one size fits all" when it comes to add-on software.
DEMOS AND TRIALS ARE AVAILABLE
In many cases, these QuickBooks add-on software vendors provide webinars, trials or demos to help you see just how their software connect and works with QuickBooks, as well as the additional functionality they offer that QuickBooks doesn't.
Before you begin your search in the Intuit Marketplace for add-on software, it is critical to develop a list of the "must have" and "nice to have" features you are looking for. In addition, having some type of budget handy will be exceptionally helpful too.
CONFUSED BY IT ALL?
It can be easy to get overwhelmed with all the options and choices available to you.
Not to worry - one of the services I offer is a needs analysis to help you develop what is called a "short list" of potential QuickBooks add-on software solutions to review and evaluate.
If you think the functionality of a QuickBooks add-on makes sense, but don't have the time to invest in sorting out the fact from fiction, let's talk further.

Managing the Paperwork
- Greetings All,
As we all know, when an Entrepreneur starts his/her business, there is a ton of paperwork to deal with. Who wants that? All we want to do is do our work and make money while solving people's problems with our brilliance!
The purpose of this thread is to find out what everyone has done to manage their paperwork/bills.
I, for one, am horrible at managing such things. I still have quite a number of receipts that have to be inputted into QuickBooks Pro from last year! I'm a techie and can fix pretty much any PC issues or develop some awesome online marketing ideas for businesses....but please, dont' ask me to figure out how QBPro calculates taxes and why the GST has to be separated in the setup and inputting in the Enter Bills area. To me, this is confusing (and you too after re-reading that paragraph....)
So, in the past I tried a high-school Co-Op student. This was a brilliant way to get someone who knows QuickBooks and did not cost me any money. The downside, rules stated that I could not leave him alone. So if I went out on a call, so did he. He brought paperwork to do stuff while we were out so it wasn't too bad. The other downside, he didn't truly want to be an accountant as he was late at _least_ once a week as well as absent at least one day a week (keeping in mind he was only with me 4 days a week). A pure example of someone being forced to follow a parent's footsteps.
So, that little experiment went well. I did get some great work from him when he was there. I still used a regular accountant to do my taxes and they talked back and forth easily to make sure my stuff was inline. I would consider doing this again.
Currently, I am looking at hiring someone for a couple of hours a week. My schedule is not at all static. I could be in Algonquin Park one day and Sarnia the next. So, having someone work once a week is a much better solution for my scenario.
Has anyone done anything different? If so, what has and has not worked for you so far?
QuickBooks vs. Microsoft Money vs....?
- I have always used Microsoft Money to run my business - accounting, invoicing, etc. It came with my computer when I got it and integrated well with my online banking system so everything is a breeze. It only takes 30-60 minutes every quarter to do the bookkeeping (keep in mind that I have a very simple business - no inventory, very little invoicing, I do all my payments by credit card, etc).
Is QuickBooks or Money the best accounting tool for small business owners? Or is there something even better?
Getting Started In Your New Internet Business
- I always think it’s fun and exciting to start a new Internet business. I know for me that I would do something that I’m interested and passionate about. Otherwise the new venture doesn’t last for long. As it’s just as important to have passion, motivation and interest, there are a few areas that help me succeed in business.
Promoting Your Internet Business
I would call this the “show me the money” part of the business. Without money or income, there is no business. Therefore it’s important to promote your business and turn your promotional activities into sales. At every opportunity, try to promote your business through passive means: e.g. through your stationary, letterheads, emails, brochures and any other promotional material you may use. Even if it’s just an article you write for a directory, remember to put your website address at the bottom of it. In the past, I made stickers of my logo that I could easily stick on my products. Also I made sure that every email I sent out to a customer had a company logo in it. This all helps with creating the brand for the business.
It’s crucial to develop a marketing plan that will not only sell your products, but also your brand. Here are some other articles I recommend to read to help you promote your Internet business:

Operating Your Business
This is the “lifeblood” of the business and I’m amazed at the amount of businesses that still operate without having good systems in place. An electrician I use from time to time asked me how I maintain my book work and said he doesn’t know how to do it. I was shocked because I’d known him to be trading for over 2 years and he probably doesn’t know how much money is being made in his business or let alone lost. What I am saying is to not be like my Electrician friend and make sure you buy an accounting software to track all your accounts and paperwork. I would suggest hiring a book keeper because it will save you the hassle and time of doing it all yourself. Some good software packages out there that are under $500 like MYOB Accounting and QuickBooks will be more than sufficient when you start out.
Another area that most people forget or get caught out on are getting the appropriate insurances for your business. The most common are public liability insurance, fire, burglary, vehicle and workers compensation insurance. All these can be easily found via a quick search on Google. I would recommend ensuring both public liability and fire insurances are in place before even running your business.
Keeping Pace And Staying Up To Date
This may sound all too overwhelming when you have to promote, operate your business and keep up to date with your industry. Believe me it’s not as hard as it sounds. Take the first step and join a trade association or your local Chamber of Commerce. You will find it both informative and beneficial to your business. To know what is happening in your area and within your industry can help you make better decisions for promoting your product or service. Whether it may be time to change a product line or add more services to your business, you will be keeping up with the industry and making sure you are not missing out on opportunities. Also it’s a great way to network and promote within your trade associations and Chamber of Commerce. Simply write an article to contribute and it can be used as great public relations (P.R) for your business.
Also I emphasise to have a well prepared business plan created before starting your business, because this will be your starting point. A business plan is useful for so many areas for your business from sourcing finance to implementing a growth strategy for the next 5 years. Once it’s written down, it will become a living breathing document that you can update and review over time. I’ve just finished preparing my business plan for this business which took nearly 3 weeks to complete but I can tell you that it is well worth the time and effort to do. Learn how to put your own business plan together and I can guarantee you that you’ll get finance and negotiate business deals much easier.
The Future Of Your Internet Business
Starting your Internet Business is rewarding and if you look into those areas I have mentioned, then you will have a good foundation to running a successful Internet Business. Take action today and know that you deserve to live your dream.
