Save (UK) tax and national insurance with your limited company

It is possible to reduce your (UK) personal tax and national insurance by running your business via a limited company. The amount you can save will depend upon several factors:

* The company’s profitability
* Your personal circumstances
* The amount of funds you need to withdraw from the business

Why tax and National Insurance savings are possible

Sole traders (and partners in a partnership) are currently taxed on their profits whether or not they withdraw them from the business. Depending upon their profitability and other income they could be paying tax and national insurance at a combined rate of 41%.

Companies pay National Insurance on wages at 12.8% (over £5,435 pa) and if the director is paid a low salary (between £5,435 and £6,035) and no benefits in kind, then the company will have a very small company National Insurance charge. This level of salary uses the director’s personal allowances so the company receives a tax deduction for the salary and the director pays no tax (assuming no other earned income).

Dividends
Dividends can only be paid out of the company’s after tax profits i.e. for the year to 31 March 2009 a maximum of 79% of the pre-tax profit, otherwise they will be illegal under Company Law and HM Revenue & Customs may treat them as loans/salary with adverse tax consequences.

Other things to consider.
There are many other issues to be considered when choosing whether to trade as a sole trader or limited company, including legal and commercial, as well as the additional administrative requirements.

Health insurance Health insurance - And as far as unplanned expenses, I'd like to suggest that everybody go right out and get health insurance if you don't have it already. As well as long-term disability insurance. Regardless of whether you run your own business or not, you simply can't afford to be without health insurance.
Re: Insurance for Home Based Business? Re: Insurance for Home Based Business? - My home is insured for all the points mentioned here, and i also have insurance for my laptop. Here you must have insurance when you take a mortgage on your house, and everything is covered, visitors, fire, earthquakes, dogs, etc. The first thing I did after buying the laptop is calling my insurance agent and enter it to the policy.

It is very dangerous for people to not have health insurance, dental insurance, etc., yet those of us who are self-employed have a tendency to not buy it because we can't afford it. I, for example, don't have any coverage of any kind. But, I'm reasonably healthy, have no kids who need coverage, etc. Perhaps a better question would be - if you don't have coverage, why not? Too expensive? You're superstitious, etc?[/quote:20rus3mw] Hi Barbara, Well I live in Ontario, so I already have free health insurance (OHIP)... but I don't have any dental coverage and I have to pay for my own drugs/medication, etc. To answer your question, I guess the reason I don't have any additional coverage is that I just don't know where to start. For instance, what's a good company to buy a plan from?
Insurance for Home Based Business? Insurance for Home Based Business? - Apparently homeowners insurance and liability insurance may not be enough to cover your at home based business. Especially if you are running the business out of a detached garage or other dwelling on your property. Does anyone have another type of business insurance for their home based business or know anything about this?
