Think you know everything there is to know about on-page SEO optimization? There are still tons of things to be learned. There are a lot of tedious facts and little tidbits that you should know about. Some of them are more important than others, some of them can be neglected at times, but when it comes down to it - it's all about dotting your i's and crossing your T's when it comes to SEO and perfecting the art. If you want to cement top rankings for specific keywords pay attention to the tips that will be revealed throughout this article.

Title Tag Length and Formatting

Your title tag can be as long as you want it to be, but if it's super long, then the search engines will stop counting words after a certain amount of characters as it will begin to look like you are just keyword stuffing and trying to spam the search engines.

SEOmoz - one of the leading SEO companies out there recommends that your title length be no longer than 70 characters but anything over 66 is going to get truncated and cut off by Google. The shorter the title tags the better. Make sure you hit one or two main keywords and then call it a day. At the end of the day, you want to write something that you think is going to better your chances of someone clicking on that link, and not just for optimizing for keywords (although that is a huge part of it).

Optimizing Meta Tags

First of all, you should know that there is more than two meta tags, the two most popular being the description and the keywords (which Google stopped looking at as a ranking signal years ago and which Bing actually uses as an indicator of SPAM). The description is recommended to be under 160 characters but if you really want to play on the safe side it should really be under 155. You shouldn't spend more than 10 seconds on meta keywords.

The canonical tag is a meta tag that is less known about but quite important. What it does is uniform all of the different possible URL's that someone might type in to get to your web site or link to you by. For example ww.domain.com is the same as domain.com but search engines actually see those two domains as completely different. The canonical tag will resolve this problem for you and make sure you are getting all of the lovely link juice that you deserve.

Other On-Page Tips

You want to make sure your header tags are optimized with your targeted keywords and that they are not too long. If you are keyword stuffing, Google is going to know it. Why do you think "blackhat" SEO's are always wondering what the perfect keyword density is? Here are a few more tips to leave with you.
