Always Ask What Then?

Guest post by: Duane Hatfield

Article Overview: Often as we receive instructions to accomplish a task we are satisfied with the first part of the directions given. This can lead to confusion and a failure to attain the prescribed results because our minds weren’t considering the next action. Nothing is as simple a process as we might think and normally builds upon the next procedure. Everything is a series of operations, producing the desired outcome.

Always Ask What Then?

Often as we receive instructions to accomplish a task we are satisfied with the first part of the directions given. This can lead to confusion and a failure to attain the prescribed results because our minds weren’t considering the next action. Nothing is as simple a process as we might think and normally builds upon the next procedure. Everything is a series of operations, producing the desired outcome.

This was a question asked by President John Adams on many occasions to substantiate the continuing process of suggestions. People of power and authority always receive a flood of advice and suggestions in the areas of their influence and should always consider each. We know as President of the United States there must be hundreds of these inputs on a daily basis, making the decisions to be made more complex than imaginable. Asking the question “What Then?” to me would be as much of a response to any of them as asking why something should be done. Knowing not only the reason to act but also the response to any reaction to that action.

We too must constantly ask this same question to be aware of the required procedures to accomplish our goals. In everyday life as well as in our businesses we must constantly be aware of the need to increase our knowledge and ability. Being in an attitude of increased strength and fortitude we can’t be satisfied with our current position, knowing the ever-changing landscape of things requires our modification. To be satisfied and remain as we are causes the loss of our competitiveness and breeds complacency and ultimate failure. We must always stand ready to move to the next level of expertise and strive for advancement. There will always be another step to take on the road to success and we must be prepared and willing to take it.

There is no final answer to the continuing process of growth and accomplishment in our lives. Our journey and our lives have no stopping place until it’s ended and it’s time to meet Jesus. It is imperative to always be in an attitude and mindset of learning. The old ways may be tried and true but new means of application are available and often effective. Using your abilities and resources to there fullest is the only way to achieve personal completeness and satisfaction.

In the process of receiving instructions or teaching it is essential to give our complete attention and total acknowledgement of the subject. The omission of the smallest detail may turn the greatest lesson into a catastrophe. Always strive to understand every point and be ready to know “What Then?”
