Commitment, Your Word is Your Bond

There are very few things a person has control over. We attempt to live our lives righteously, use our time wisely, improve our health and hold our tongue, but circumstances often change our intentions. We plan to accomplish tasks, which are good, and honorable yet they are often hindered. We want to treat others with respect and dignity but emotions and characters seem to block the way. Something always prevents our accomplishment of positive actions.

The one thing we never want to be compromised is our word or an obligation we make. Why is a person’s word or promise so important to be fulfilled? What other obligation or pledge do those around us and we value more than that? If someone fails to uphold his or her commitment to us, we are devastated and feel betrayed. We never consider the obstacles, which could have hindered them or prevented their completing that promise. We just automatically brand them as a liar and loss all faith and trust in them.

As I consider the essence of commitment, I come to a realization of the importance of it. It is not only of great value to others but it should also be as important when I make it to me. I esteem it as the very basis for the integrity within me. I believe if you can’t trust the truthfulness of my words then how can you possibly trust anything about me? I feel my word is as binding as my signature and you can count on it as much.

The thing that disappoints and angers me is my failure to be as committed to keeping my promises to myself, as I am to others. I make decisions to do and accomplish things in my heart and mind but those are the first ones to be unfulfilled. I put other people’s desires and other things first and then fail to achieve my own objectives. I justify it by telling myself I can do it later, but later never comes. I procrastinate and say I will accomplish it after the fact, but the time or resources may no longer be available. I always have an excuse but never take the required action.

We should be dedicated to being as truthful to ourselves as we are to others and remember those promises are as binding as well. Considering our needs to be as valuable as those we associate with, will release the anxiety we sometimes feel because we are ignoring ourselves. Efficiently utilizing our time and energy for us will permit more for others.

Are You a Businessgirl or a Businesswoman? Are You a Businessgirl or a Businesswoman? - One thing that has irked me off and on for 30 years is the tendency of people - both men [i:2wryyhvf]and [/i:2wryyhvf]women, to refer to women, whatever their age, as 'girls' rather than women. College basketball announcers, coachers and players do it, as do the fans. These are 'girls' who are between the ages of 18 - 21, that's women in my book. Tennis players and announcers do it. John McEnroe called 'em girls and just when I was getting annoyed at him for being a bit of a male chauvanist, they interviewed player Lindsay Davenport - 30 years old, and she referred to 'em as girls as well. The Bond "girls" were girls up until the 90s, I admit, doing nothing more than providing someone for Bond to bed and rescue, but in the last few installments the "girl" has been more of a power player...nevertheless she's still a 'girl'. And of course there was the TV series The Golden Girls - which I liked by the way, but which featured mature women calling themselves girls And now here it is in the 2000s, and we get this: The Girl's Guide To Starting Your Own Business, by Caitlin Friedman and Kimberly Yorio. Their photos are on the cover - presumably the photo is of them and not models - and they are definitely women, not girls. And what "girly" chapter titles do they give us? "The Scary Stuff" (financial matters) and a chapter on ACTING Like an Adult. (Caps mine). So popular was this book, apparently, that they've now come out with a sequel: The Girl's Guide to Being a Boss (Without Being A Bitch): Valuable Lessons, Smart Suggestions, and true stories for succeeding as the CHICK-IN-CHARGE. (My caps) and once again I was tempted to take the book and throw it across the room. Let's indulge in [i:2wryyhvf]all [/i:2wryyhvf]the cliches, shall we? So I'd like to hear from other businesswomen out there. Do you find yourself referred to as a girl? Do you mind it? Do you like the culture that still propagates that mindset?
