Do You Hear What you Can’t See?

This story offers a practical application to the problem we all have of overcoming distractions. It is an ever-present evil we must contend with to achieve the duties of daily living. The concentration required to complete any objective lies solely within us and will determine the quality of it.

I heard a story the other day about a Grandpa who was at a family function and lost his pocket watch. He gathered his grandchildren around him and told them about losing his watch and how he would give the one who found it a crisp ten-dollar bill. The children immediately began feverishly running around searching for the watch. The grandpa noticed one of his grandsons was casually looking around without the least amount of urgency, almost as if he knew the location of the watch. The search continued until the children’s bedtime when it was postponed until the next day. In the morning the grandson who had casually searched went to his grandpa and handed him the watch. Everyone was amazed and asked how he had found it. He told them he had gotten up early while everyone was asleep and just listened for the ticking. He knew in the silence of the day he could hear what couldn’t be seen and would achieve his goal.

This brings to mind how we often conduct ourselves amid the hustle and bustle of daily life. Usually we are so caught up in its happenings and distractions that it is impossible to keep our minds in check much less accomplish any meaningful tasks. We struggle to overcome the smallest interruptions, which shouldn’t even be considered. We give credence to the slightest sound and movement, letting our attention be constantly diverted. Everything requires our immediate attention with no option to be postponed.

It is amusing how we accomplish the most important things when we’re surrounded by the quiet and peaceful times of life. So often our mental capacity seems to increase and our creativity overflows when we close out the world around us. This doesn’t always need to occur in the silence of hours when others are asleep but can be possible anytime we decide to ignore the distractions. If we will designate a set length of time to devote our attention to a particular endeavor, ignoring everything until that time is completed, it will be as though the world is muted. Creating the environment to separate ourselves from disturbances is our individual responsibility and must be accomplished however it can. We always need to enter within ourselves to sort our thoughts and feelings into a usable order, allowing our achievement of important tasks.

So no matter what you are attempting to accomplish it is imperative to create the atmosphere of achievement. Always set your surroundings to support the task and allow yourself to overlook things until that task is completed. You will never be disappointed in a job well done.
