Great Leaders Prioritize
Responsibility prioritizing is done by everyone and
about everything we undertake. From the smallest effort we exert to the most
complicated mission attempted each is receives a position of importance. We
decide when and how tasks are completed and the value placed on each one. The
list can be written or mental but it is still made.
Everything about our lives gets prioritized. No
matter what we are involved in or tasks we must accomplish a priority will be
set for them all. Often this is done by what we feel is most important or will
be due first. Other times they are ordered by the time available to achieve
their completion. Most times it seems we are like firemen and only do things
when they become an emergency. Whatever criteria we use to determine this list
we need to expect things will occur to interrupt the process but persistence is
required to stay on course.
The decision when we perform these duties is our own
but do we use the best process? There have been many proven statements and
opinions given as to the most efficient ways to set priorities. One of these I
especially like is “Put the Big Rocks in First”. If we consider our daily
responsibilities as rocks being put into a jar and we put the big ones in
first, the smaller things will fill the jar later. Doing the larger tasks first
finishes them and leaves time for more small ones. If we complete the small
things first the larger ones often go undone and they are usually the most
profitable.
Priority setting in business is a vital and
fundamental part of the operation. Leaders constantly must adjust them for
continual positive productivity. They are never carved in stone or are
unchangeable because customer and associate needs always vary and must be
accommodated. It is important for leaders to keep sight of the final outcome
and guide procedures in that direction. Part of that precedence setting may
require duty delegation or even eliminating the project so the leadership may
focus on what only they can complete. Leadership requires decision making with
confidence and taking full responsibility for the actions and proper priority
setting will accomplish this.
So whatever system you use to determine your
priorities remember it is essential to follow it consistently. Bouncing from
one item to another never gets anything accomplished and leaves everything only
started. Persistence and drive toward a goal achieves it and distractions will
kill it.

Re: Management Processes?
- Great question Aaron. Like you and Kevin have indicated, we can get a lot done by creating a management process. I like to:
Prioritize what I need to do in order of importance.
Pick the top priority item.
Brainstorm possible tasks.
Pick a task and complete it.
Move on to the next task.
I find this helps break things down into manageable pieces. It also helps just to take small actions.
