Have a Forgiving Spirit
There are many things that prevent
us from accomplishments. As we know the list is miles long and is constantly
added to. Any excuse we want will be supplied to us. All we need to do is
procrastinate a few minutes and a world of reasons not to begin will arise.
There is no cause to make a list we each have our own. The problem I see today
is one that may not seem prevalent and often hides behind others we use. It is
the anxiety and resentment that comes from not forgiving.
The lack of forgiveness we can
carry against others or ourselves has the potential to permanently devastate
us. The very thought of it can drive senses to the brink of exploding and
bodily functions into turmoil. It may be the cause of physical and emotional
illnesses that even doctors can’t help. High blood pressure, severe headaches,
stress, tension, and even depression can be a result of feelings harbored
because of blame and guilt. Our entire lives can be so obsessed with the anger,
frustration and irritation we are totally consumed by it. These emotions
directed toward others can be physically abusive, but toward us seem more
psychological.
The factors causing this situation
can be varied but always are based inside of us. Yes, I said inside of
“US”. The “others” involved seldom know
a conflict exists and actually didn’t do anything to cause it. Our expectations
weren’t met and we placed the failure upon them. In the case of not forgiving
ourselves, the accusation is based on not applying the required effort to
complete tasks or our inabilities. We are ashamed of the inadequacy in our own
selves and don’t overcome it. It grows larger and stronger filling our inner
beings with the despair. We see no hope or possibility of change and are
overwhelmed with helplessness.
Failing to forgive ourselves is a
reminder of past failures that haunt us. In order to free ourselves of them we
must realize nothing can be done to change them and dwelling on them only
hinders today. Releasing the past gives new meaning to “living in the present”
and permits improvements in life. Lives are molded by past experiences but
correcting mistakes occurs today. Don’t restrict your future with weights from
the past.
