Recognize Challenges

Recognizing challenges is the first step in overcoming them. Realizing that finding the root cause of the problem will tell us how to conquer it, we can confront any opposition and win. The only way to be defeated is if we let the obstacle grow larger than us and submit to it. Using the abilities within us will reveal the answers.

Many things, which happen to us, are challenges and usually we see them as being larger than they are. Often the first response we have is to panic and wonder how we can possibly get through it. We allow our minds to see the obstacle as a mountain to be climbed, knowing the climb will be hard and treacherous. We imagine the dangers and the pitfalls we’ll encounter as well as the pain and agony we’ll bear. Still knowing our journey is ahead if we do make it through.

Challenges don’t always have to be overcome but may only need to be confronted and considered. Looking at them calmly and assessing the problem rationally will show it’s true basis. Often, after seeing what is really involved in the obstacle a minor change in our plan maybe all that is required. When this occurs and we realize how simple dealing with things are and we feel ashamed of how we have reacted on past occasions.

After we determine the severity of the obstacle and the actions required to conquer it, it will shrink into part of the process. Every time we overcome a challenge we gain strength and determination to finish our journey. As we face more and more opposition and confrontation, we realize our problems only have the power we allow. Each one is a stepping-stone toward the goal and the satisfaction of completing the achievement. There is no such thing as insurmountable odds, if we constantly strive to overcome them.

Never attempt to attack an obstacle head on and with full force. Each one has it’s own set of variables and must be confronted individually. The same methods won’t work in every situation so be prepared to attempt different ones using your thought processes. Never give up; the joy of overcoming is sweeter than the fear. There is no place to quit and there is no “win” in surrender.

Recognize that your board will find benefit for themselves in other ways too. Being involved will introduce them to new people, ideas, networks etc. As well, it provides a way for them to give back.[/quote:171m8ezz] Hi Jude, If you choose to offer stock options, would you know how much is appropriate? I heard once that it should range between 1-2%. Is that about right? And how many people are on your advisory board at the moment if you don't mind me asking? Moreover, do they know what one another receives as compensation?
Advisory Boards - Step 3 & 4 Advisory Boards - Step 3 & 4 - After you have determined what you want your advisory board to accomplish or provide, and you have found what you think are the right people, the next step is to set expectations. 3) set expectations This is a crucial step and one that seems to get short changed. By communicating your expectations of yourself, your advisors as individuals and as a group - you will shorten the length of time it takes to really gel as a group and move your business forward. Lay down the ground rules early about what you expect as far as time, responsibilities, terms of office etc. Specify the areas in which you are seeking help. and if your board is going to be discussing confidential information (which I trust it will) make sure you speak up right away about signing confidentiality agreements etc. Step 4) Compensate your advisory Board Depending on who you are asking and how involved you are asking them to be, compensation can range from providing food at meetings, to covering expenses, paying a stipend or offering stock options. Recognize that your board will find benefit for themselves in other ways too. Being involved will introduce them to new people, ideas, networks etc. As well, it provides a way for them to give back. Talking up front about compensation, and varies methods, you will find out what the advisor is looking for. Keep in mind that each member might want something different so its important to know what you are comfortable offering. Personally, I have a variety of advisors who are compensated in very different ways, but none have an equity position in my business as of yet. I found that many retired professionals are looking for ways to give back so being on the receiving side of their 'tithing' wonderful. They only ask that I pay the favor forward which I do. Until next time Jude
