What's Leadership?

It is a natural instinct to want to be a leader yet so many people have no idea what is required to be one. As they climb the ladder of success they feel they are leaders and have the demeanor requiring being followed without earning it. Rank has it’s privilege but not in the hearts of men and so conformity is through duty.

The definition of leadership has been given many times yet it is often compounded with other traits that affect it. It has been considered the function, the position and even the act of leading, which is fine, but what does it really mean? We know leading is going before, showing the way or guiding yet it is still more than that. Leadership is not just the action of the one leading but must also be a part of those being led. With no followers there is no leader and herein lies the problem with past definitions.

The most basic expression of leadership is that it is influence. Leaders will not be followed unless they have the influence on others to cause them to follow. People don’t follow others solely for that reason; most feel they know as well as anyone, what is best. There must be something about the other person to bring them to action. Something that makes us yield our selves to the guidance and direction of another. This can be realizing their level of knowledge, the experience they possess or even the perspective they have on things. They may radiate with the ability to achieve what you are looking for or desire and give evidence that it is possible for you. No matter what causes it we develop an attraction to them and want those qualities for ourselves.

Leadership is not an automatic result of attitude or position. People who are followed because of these are called bosses or superiors. They have a title of authority or give the impression that they know what is best and they require being followed. Neither of these grants leadership but merely obedience and will be rescinded after the task is accomplished. True leadership results when people want to follow and are willing to give of themselves to support that leader. The influence we have on others is precious and should be valued as much as the person. We should strive to always have their best interests in mind and cherish the faith they have placed in us.

Never mistake compliance with directives with being followed. People may do what you tell them but without being a positive influence in their lives it is empty service. Give others your attention and truly care for them and they will become a part of you. There is no greater compliment anyone can give you than to uphold you in your leadership.

Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight - Hi Everyone, Gosh, I REALLY appreciate your concrete feedback. This was far more than I expected and I'm glad you said what you thought straight out. Each of you have shared something of value and I want to take some more time to think and really go over what each of you have said. However, I can see there are some things I need to change right away. What an interesting point about a NEW program perhaps making people think they are guinea pigs! This is NOT what I want to convey! It's funny how we can see some things so clearly in others while not always seeing it for ourselves! I must admit there are a few things I've been meaning to change (like my bio which is very outdated). Obviously, these things need to be higher on my priority list. You caught me like the plumber who puts his clients first and doesn't get around to fixing his own tap! As far as my target market, I do feel quite strongly about working with Women Leaders and doing Leadership Coaching with them. It's non-negotiable in my books. In my Executive Coaching training, the terms "Leaders" and "Executives" are interchangable. To me, an Executive is a Leader and so is the Business Woman or Entrepreneur who is CEO of her own business. I love working with decision makers! What I did learn is that I need to avoid opening up the Leadership term beyond what I described above. I'm also wondering if there is a misunderstanding with the general public as to what Leadership Coaching really is. Leadership Coaching is all about developing your leadership skills, both as a people manager and in more effectively running and growing the business. There is ALWAYS room for growth in some way. As well, sometimes, we just need a sounding board to clarify what our next BEST step is. In fact, if a woman thinks she has nothing to work on, then we aren't a good Client/Coach fit anyway. How can she grow if she doesn't see the value of expressing ALL of the great ability within her? How can her company grow if she doesn't see the value of strategic planning for the next best level? Thanks again to you all! I will go back to my website and really question whether I am conveying the right message. I got more than I bargained for in this Spotlight... you generously offered way more than I was asking. I think we could be on to something great for the Forum. Now it's time to let someone else have the spotlight. It would be great if everyone took a turn! In gratitude, Tami
