Who's Responsible?
Isn’t it funny how many times the
question “Who's Responsible?” is asked on a daily basis? It seems no matter
what the situation or problem someone always wants to know, who’s responsible.
It doesn’t matter what the final outcome of anything is, people want to know
who is to blame. It’s the most underlying factor that has to be dealt with and
it is usually a precursor to discipline or correction. For many people it is
the only thing they expect from others.
When
children are together and a different noise is heard, whether it’s fighting or
something breaking or one of them cries, we reassure their safety and then our
concern is who was at fault. When young people get into situations they
shouldn’t and others get involved, that question is asked again. Even when
employees do something wrong or make a mistake many employers are always ready find
out who’s responsible. This is one reason people don’t take initiative or go
beyond direct instructions, everyone is afraid to be responsible. No matter
what happens, if the result is negative someone has to be blamed and the
“powers that be” want to know, who is responsible?
One
thing I have come to realize is being responsible is not a bad thing. We have
all heard the adage; “The only person who hasn’t made a mistake is the one who
hasn’t done anything” and this is very true. The only way people usually learn
is by their own or someone else’s mistakes. And yes, some mistakes do deserve
discipline but not all of them and not in every instance. This only slows
productivity, reduces the possibility of learning and in turn promotes fear and
anxiety.
Responsibility
is a trait we all must bear and never shirk. Our position in life cannot be
blamed on others and rightly shouldn’t be. Many people feel their problems are
the fruit of someone else’s labors but we must each yield our own. We want to
justify ourselves and excuse our inabilities or lack of initiative as the fault
of others. We must all realize that no one can make decisions nor implement
them for us unless we let them and then THAT is our decision.
Don’t consider
responsibility to only be a result of a mistake but also a point of positive
control. Taking charge and knowing the end result is in your control should
give a sense of pride and determination to accomplish more. Don’t only take
responsibility for problems but also take it to accomplish the task.
No matter where we
are in life it is the result of our decisions. We are responsible for our past
and our future. The decisions we have
made in the past have determined where we are now and the decisions we make today
will determine our tomorrow. The responsibility is solely ours and whether we
prosper or fail it’s up to us. Make today the best day of your life and decide
to be what you think you should be.
