Limitations of Paid Search Marketing for Small Businesses
Paid search marketing, also known as PPC, is one of the most practiced online marketing strategies. It can be a very effective way of getting your ads in front those directly searching for your product, but what about those who aren't directly searching? Here are some limitations to consider before starting your own paid search campaign.
Competition is Fierce:
For small businesses, it can be very difficult to compete within the paid search realm. Targeting specific keywords can be expensive, and the more people competing for those specific keywords can drive up the cost even more. This can give large corporations the upper hand because they typically have larger budgets for this type of marketing.
Limited Reach:
Only those directly searching your specific keywords will see your ads. Sure, this is great for those looking, but those who aren't will be unaware of your ads. Small businesses don't always have the luxury of being a household name, so it's important to get your name out there to potential prospects.
Minimal Branding:
Paid search campaigns can help get your name out there, with highly-searched keywords, but that still doesn't differentiate you from other competitors. In other words, it doesn't leave a lasting impression - which is essential when it comes to branding. Defining how your product is unique through your messaging and style can best be displayed through banner ads.
If Not Paid Search, Then What?:
While paid search can be effective in attracting customers that are searching for your products, it's important to focus on other potential prospects as well. For instance, let's take those who may be searching for your product in the future. If you start a banner display campaign, your brand will be displayed across the web on multiple sites. This helps expand your reach and create brand awareness.
Another strategy to consider is retargeting. By using retargeted banners you can attract customers back to your site, after they have left without generating a lead or purchase.
