Different Types of Outdoor Billboards - Learn Which Formats Are Worth the Most
You may have seen countless outdoor billboards in your life and they may all have looked the same to you. However, you will be surprised to find out that that there are many different types. There are different types of billboards for different types of budgets. Not only are there cheap billboards, but there are also more expensive billboards like the ones you see along major freeways and highways.
Other than cost, several other things differentiate billboards. The first is the format. Billboards are available in several standardized designs.
- 14' x 48'
- 10'6"x 36'
- 12' x 24' (also referred to as the 30 sheet poster)
- 6' x 12' (also referred to as the 8 sheet poster)
The other thing that differentiates outdoor billboards is what holds up the sign. If you take a closer look at billboards as you drive past them on the highways, you will notice that they are some that are propped by a monopole (single steel pole) while others have a different base. Here are the four main formats:
- Monopole: This is a single steel pole that you typically see along main highways and freeways. The monopole is considered the top of the line billboard. Not only is the most expensive to build, it is also worth the most if you sell this type of sign in the future.
- Steel Multi-Pole: This is a cheaper alternative to the monopole. However, it is also worth less than the monopole in terms of resale value.
- Steel I-beam: This is the standard base for the 12' x 24'.
- Wooden Multi-Pole: These bases look like the wooden telephone and utility poles. While this is the cheapest way to build a billboard, they look bad, have poor resale value, and have a tendency to fall down especially during high winds.
In summary, it is in your best interest to stick to the sizes and configurations of the big companies, since they will demand this similarity if you try to sell to them down the road. Stick to steel construction for billboards unless you're out in a remote, rural area.
