Wall Street, “Africa is Investing’s Final Frontier”

Written by: Erik Hersman

Article Overview: I came across an interesting article in Canada’s Globe & Mail entitled, “Africa - Investing’s Final Frontier?“. The piece talks about how Africa has been overlooked, primarily due to the perceived risks associated with putting money into play in Africa. They quote extensively from Merrill Lynch chief investment strategist Richard Bernstein and his thoughts on what makes Africa a potential big hit in the coming years.

Wall Street, “Africa is Investing’s Final Frontier”

I came across an interesting article in Canada’s Globe & Mail entitled, “Africa - Investing’s Final Frontier?“. The piece talks about how Africa has been overlooked, primarily due to the perceived risks associated with putting money into play in Africa. They quote extensively from Merrill Lynch chief investment strategist Richard Bernstein and his thoughts on what makes Africa a potential big hit in the coming years.

While India, China and other emerging markets are now permanent fixtures on the radar screens of the media and investors, Africa is brimming with under-followed companies and stock markets, Mr. Bernstein said. Furthermore, the continent is rich in oil and other commodities, the very resources that are fuelling the booming economies investors are clamouring for.

The Merrill report pointed to ten investment opportunities in Africa:

Oil
Commodities
Agriculture
Health care
Infrastructure
Telecommunications
Information technology
Defence
Financial services
Retail

It’s good to see some of the larger US investment organizations looking closer at Africa. I hope that more investors do take a serious look at African enterprises. The will to build business and wealth in Africa is there already, what has been lacking is the capital to build.

Re: Why Did You Become An Entrepreneur? Re: Why Did You Become An Entrepreneur? - I didn't want a limit on what I could make. I grew up in the 60's and you didn't have the money making possibilities you have now. I came out of college and went to Wall Street in 1974 as a stockbroker/commodities broker. People were doing well but not the crazy numbers we see today. All I knew was that the people making big money were the people who were in their own business.
Trump's Favourite Books Trump's Favourite Books - In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Donald Trump said he enjoyed reading biographies: "I like to read about philosophers - particularly Socrates, who emphasizes you should follow the convictions of your own conscience, which basically means thinking for yourself, a philosophy I tend to agree with." Just an interesting factoid...So, even Trump looks to those who came before him for strategies of success!
Re: need advice Re: need advice - Africa is a pretty big place I think it is a question of where in Africa you would like to open a call centre. South Africa for example actually has plenty of call centres already operating, so it would very much depend on what part of Africa you are considering. MichelleJ

Re: Are Economic Recessions Good for Franchising? Re: Are Economic Recessions Good for Franchising? - Since the last post we have had the collapse of part of our financial industry, a freeze-up of almost all business and commercial loans, an intense election, a significant stock market drop, the bailout of the big three automakers, unprecedented actions by the FED to try to prop up the economy, and have entered a possible era of deflation. Much of the rest of the world has followed us into the same situation. I would have to agree with some earlier statements that in the past franchising may have strengthened or even thrived when a slowdown affected part of the economy. However, this situation is different, where financial services, autos, Wall Street, homebuilding, home ownership, and employment are all concerns. Franchising may not escape this situation unscathed.
