Enhanced Google Maps for East Africa

Article Overview: On tuesday I had the rare opportunity courtesy of Chris Kiagiri, Technical Lead at Google Kenya to have a sneak peek at the upcoming enhanced google mpas for east africa and let me say it was truly awesome. The amount of detail in this new version is quite amazing, a quick look at the nairobi map goes as far down as streets, buildings (building name and icon) and even adds information to indicate if the street is one way or two way. The enhanced maps currently cover major cities and towns in East Africa including Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, and Dar es Salaam.

Enhanced Google Maps for East Africa

On tuesday I had the rare opportunity courtesy of Chris Kiagiri, Technical Lead at Google Kenya to have a sneak peek at the upcoming enhanced google mpas for east africa and let me say it was truly awesome. The amount of detail in this new version is quite amazing, a quick look at the nairobi map goes as far down as streets, buildings (building name and icon) and even adds information to indicate if the street is one way or two way. The enhanced maps currently cover major cities and towns in East Africa including Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, and Dar es Salaam.

Another interesting service I happened to see was the Location based service that integrates google maps with Safaricom to show you where you are on the map based on your mobile phone. I think this service is quite promising and there are different services such map direction services, amenity location services that can leverage this technology.

I mentioned in an earlier post here that with this new map the mashup wars can finally begin, well the starting shot has been fired, may the best man or woman win.

Re: need advice - Africa is a pretty big place I think it is a question of where in Africa you would like to open a call centre. South Africa for example actually has plenty of call centres already operating, so it would very much depend on what part of Africa you are considering. MichelleJ

Re: Men don't wear ties (necktie: US) like before! - Time and place. Some places of business really do require a tie. Depending on your business, you're often dressing for your client's comfort more than your own. When I meet with clients at a big corporate office downtown, I of course wear a suit. But when I meet clients in less formal settings, such as a restaurant in The East Village or Lower East Side (and I know my client is going to be wearing jeans), then I wear a stylish outfit that matches my environment, but is just slightly dressier than my surroundings. So I really dress for the setting I'll be in and also for my clients comfort. I noticed that when I started to wear dressier clothing, my clients actually matched me and upped the level of their own dress which I found interesting.
