Race towards connecting Africa to the internet
This week there was an interesting article here about one of the companies undertaking the construction of the underwater fibre optic cable and their search for a strategic investor, I can't help but feel excited when I hear about such news for the very reason that its now common knowledge that in the next 2 years Africa will be interconnected to the rest of the internet. Currently there are several initiatives such as TEAMS, EASSY and now SEACOM (A wonderful use of acronyms) all of which aim to do the same thing but in essence competing against each other, the end result being an array of services for the consumer to choose from which is good for all parties concerned. Political machinations aside all the initiatives deserve support from all the stakeholders, I don't think it benefits anyone if any of the initiatives fail.
