Yesterday as I prepared to go to sleep I decided to head to my favorite technology and web 2.0 blog Techcrunch just to see if I'd missed something of interest (this happens a lot bearing in mind that I'm running around like a nutcase over the weekend) and one thing caught my eye that got my juices pumping StartupWeekend which apparently is/was a hookup of 70 founders who came together to build a startup in one weekend woh!! how exciting is that. I decided to watch the live USTREAM feed and see these guys work their magic, I didn't get much except a few keywords such as Ruby On Rails but that was far from the point, it got me thinking a lot may be we should have a StartUpWeekend in nairobi but instead of founders we can bring together web developers in teams (5-10 people) and push the envelope on web development. Logistical issues aside this is probably one of the most exciting things that could happen to the web development community in Kenya, not only will it get people to think and build but it will also challenge the status quo and shift focus from standard and basic applications to remarkable apps.
I will be doing a presentation on Ruby On Rails as well as Peupe (wesonga.peupe.net) during one of the skunkworks meetings this month (hopefully I'll get time) and I intend to bring this up as a point of discussion. I'm very passionate about getting the web development community to build build build applications that will get silicon valley to think twice before they look for techies from India (I have nothing against my fellow techie brothers in India).
