The importance of networking

Article Overview: This morning at 7.30am the Kenya ICT Board (www.ict.go.ke) held an open forum for the Kenya BPO & Contact Centre Society an umbrella organisation for all things outsourcing. I was to make a short presentation on some of the work we are doing on their portal, but I arrived a few minutes late so I wasn't slotted in, even though I was disappointed having worked on the powerpoint the previous night I opted to stay and hear what was to be said.

The importance of networking

This morning at 7.30am the Kenya ICT Board (www.ict.go.ke) held an open forum for the Kenya BPO & Contact Centre Society an umbrella organisation for all things outsourcing. I was to make a short presentation on some of the work we are doing on their portal, but I arrived a few minutes late so I wasn't slotted in, even though I was disappointed having worked on the powerpoint the previous night I opted to stay and hear what was to be said.

Several presentations and a Q&A session later the forum was over and the opportunity to network was given to all attendees. In my view the networking opportunities presented at such functions far outweighs the content of the presentations, for a small business or an entrepreneur this cannot be overstated. Many times in my discussions with techies I take the time to point out the fact that successful businesses, partnerships and deals are made at such forums, one must take advantage of them fully. Case in point, out of the interactions I got today I was able to secure about 4 prospective clients, these are clients I would not have had the chance to meet at the same place at the same time.

Entrepreneurs in Kenya (technology entrepreneurs specifically) need to understand that business isn't all about coding and hardware, the two activities only require training, the challenge is to walk out there , represent your business effectively, network with industry players and seize business opportunities that present themselves. The entrepreneur needs to seek out networking opportunities with decision makers and not decision takers.

Speed Networking anyone doing this? Speed Networking anyone doing this? - I ran a speed networking event in December and it was a phenomenal success. We had 38 attendees. Made lots of connections and had a great time. Has anyone else ran this kind of networking event? If so, what was your experience? .
Re: Speed Networking anyone doing this? Re: Speed Networking anyone doing this? - I've attended a number of speed networking. In fact I'm due to attend a massive record-breaking networking event here in Brighton (UK) in September. They're intense, frantic and can be fun but there's a lot of noise, they need to be well run to keep people to time and ensure swift transitions from one person to the next. You don't get a lot of chance to really talk to people so you MUST follow-up afterwards. It's a great way to hone your one-minute, elevator pitch and you only have a limited amount of time with each person. Also think about what you'll ask them. A good speed networking session will limit the numbers so you should get a chance to talk to the majority of the people there - 30-40max is probably the limit. It's also useful to have breaks, so you have a chance to recharge and catch up with a few people. You might be hoarse by the end of it all but you'll have met far more people than at a normal networking event. The format suits some people better than others. Clare
Re: Owning a social network software...How is it?? Re: Owning a social network software...How is it?? - Hi, I am a big fan of social networking software (75% of our business) but what we constantly have to remind people is the concept of a social network has been around for ages. It just so happens MySpace & Facebook made the ability to do it free & online mainstream and the rest is history. Our company finds that pre-developed social networking applications do not create good internet business. The simple reason is a social network is not an internet business; all it is a group of link minded individuals that are able to communicate with one another through the medium you provide. A construction company can build an office building...but that does not make it a profitable business. You need to (1) build your business and (2) build social networking software features around that business. So my advice to you, just like facebook.com opened up their code, make your social networking software open so ANYONE can modify it to meet their needs. Jeff
Re: How do you maximize your time at business/networking events? Re: How do you maximize your time at business/networking events? - Whether you realize it or not, 80% of all jobs are found by networking. That's why it is so important to consistently network and upgrade your networking skills. This may feel a little uncomfortable at first but with some practice you can quickly establish yourself as a seasoned veteran. You can establish a vast array of networking sources with this process. One contact can lead to another and another and so on. Networking remains the ultimate job search philosophy. This process allows you to establish a base of contacts through various social settings. Through your networking life line you come into contact with individuals possessing knowledge about various job openings, specific leads, as well as personnel who have the authority to make the hiring decision. When you attend business networking events always look for ways to be of service to those you network with. Don't appear pushy and overly aggressive. Make it a smooth natural conversation and ask questions of those you are speaking to and try not to focus all the attention on yourself. And do ask questions when you are speaking with a prospect ask what type of business they are in and what types of goals they have for their business or company. Finally get a business card and make a quick note on the back about something you spoke to that person about and later you will be able to inquire about that same thing. This will show you were listening and are truly interested.
Re: This ones a winner Re: This ones a winner - Dear Sboggs Congratulations on your networking idea. The guys that want $20K might be trying to bleed you or perhaps their approach is just to complex and expensive. I'm a hardware guy so I can't help with your issue. Have you studied networking and programming? You might be able to make your idea fly with some training. You can buy a website and have it online in 20 minutes. Developing a web site that generates traffic requires some work.
