SMEs - Does colonialism impact on entrepreneurialism

This is always a hot topic. However, Africa cannot lay claim to being the only continent that was colonised by the colonial powers of the day.
In effect the USA and Canada were colonised by the English and the French respectively, the Far East was also fairly well colonised.
I have listed below the global competitiveness rankings of a number of countries who were all colonised at one time or another.

Singapore 7
Hong Kong 12
Malaysia 21
South Africa 46
Botswana 76
Kenya 99
Tanzania 104
Zambia 122

What this clearly shows is that there is no superficial pattern to it indicating that colonialism was the cause of the problem. There does not appear to be any link between colonisation and current entrepreneurial trends in these countries. So where does the problem lie?

The conundrum remains?!

Re: In-House or Outsource? Re: In-House or Outsource? - Unfortunately, in the South African context, very few SMEs see outsourcing as an option. They believe it is too expensive, and they are paranoid that someone will "steal their ideas". I believe that the three main functions that cannot be outsourced are marketing, sales and strategy. These must be done in house I believe. If you do not have the marketing skills then get them. Hire a consultant or attend a course, but get the skills. Even if you use a consultant, you need to understand what marketing is about, as no one knows your market like you do. Marketing is made to seem difficult and complex, but everyone who really understands their markets, can easily learn to do their own marketing. In South Africa, labour legislation is extremely inflexibile, and consequently labour broking is a large industry. This is an ideal starting point for SMEs in South Africa, as it is a legally complex area, whih comes with severe penalties. I say do it! Rob Smorfitt

What is your hit ratio? What is your hit ratio? - Like most entrepreneurs I have more ideas for where I want to take my business than I can handle. I believe in the "fail early, fail often" philosophy and try to find small ways to get started on a project to see if it has any legs. I would estimate that for every 50 things I try, most of them don't have an impact for me, 10 of them have a slightly positive impact, and 1 hits it really big. Some of my big wins over the past few years have been: * Learning the ins and outs of search engine optimization to drive traffic * Putting up and optimizing Google AdSense ads to monetize the website * Deciding to be the leader in profiling famous entrepreneurs online * Recruiting outside authors to help contribute to the website content (now have over 25,000 pages) * Creating the entrepreneur forums * Bringing on staff to help cope with the daily amount of work required to keep things running smoothly What is your hit ratio and some of your big wins?
