1.6 Investing in jobs and the community: Working Out of Poverty

1.6 Investing in jobs and the community: Working Out of Poverty

The ILO has invested 25 years of pioneering work in the field of
employment-intensive infrastructure programmes. It has been successful. It
is now widely recognized that these programmes are effective in bringing
much needed income to poor families and their communities. These efforts
create between three and five times as much employment for the same level
of investment.

The ILO’s labour-intensive projects respect standards, promote gender
equality and encourage enterprise development through contracting systems.
And by improving the infrastructure, these projects deliver longerterm
impact to the whole community.

Working for yourself means you are investing in your own future, not someone else's, although there is value in working for someone else first to gain experience and confidence. Working for yourself does not automatically mean success, fame and fortune. For most entrepreneurs, it takes much work and dedication to get to the point of financial success and comfort - sometimes years. But the benefit is, again, you know you are investing in yourself and building equity for your own future. GT :-]
Re: Need some information on freelance jobs! - oDesk is the same as Elance where you can bid on projects/jobs that are posted. When I was working in oDesk the main problem I experienced was the difficulty in getting my first job because of competition. There are already other service providers who already have a lot of completed jobs and good ratings with good feedback. So what I did was to bid on simple jobs - I bid a very low price so that I could just get a job and hopefully when I done it right or done it well I can have a good rating and feedback. That's how I began. I slowly build my reputation by completing simple jobs and eventually I can then compete with others and can bid high already.
Re: Need some information on freelance jobs! - Hi, firstly let me confess the idea of online jobs and business alike are new to me. I had some of my own business plans but am not confident in launching the same owing to the crashing economy. Now as I see you people are talking about the freelance jobs, I wanted to know some more things about these in details. For people like us who are business minded and do not want to be working as subordinates the difference between jobs and setting up an own business is always there. Provided I cant find the best opportunity to setup my business now as already said do you think the freelance jobs about which you are talking here can be considered as an alternative for the same. Maybe thinking about finances this is going to be a safer option but is the change acceptable. I hope I could make myself clear.
Re: What or Who Sparks Your Business Interest - this might be surprise to you, but poverty spark my business interest. Poverty is prevalent in Africa. And I discovered early in life that people that own their businesses are richer than anypne else. I decided to get out of the poverty level and business provided a way of escape.
Re: Need some information on freelance jobs! - Another very prosperous web site is getafreelancer.com! It is an excellent resource to get odd jobs (or big jobs) completed by coders and persons willing to do work for lower wages. You have to exercise due diligence in weeding out proper coders, but it is doable and very manageable. Good luck!
