1.9 Building local development through cooperatives: Working Out of Poverty

Participation and inclusion are central to a new approach to poverty reduction.
Cooperatives are an ideal instrument in such a strategy, and the
ILO has long drawn on the strength of the movement. Meeting the challenges
of globalization requires strong local communities, strong local leadership
and strong local solutions. Cooperatives have proved to be a key
organizational form in building new models to combat social exclusion and
poverty, for example through local development initiatives. Cooperative
members learn from each other, innovate together and, by increasing control
over livelihoods, build up the sense of dignity that the experience of poverty
destroys.

As the world's only tripartite multilateral agency, the ILO is dedicated to bringing decent work and livelihoods, job-related security and better living standards to the people of both poor and rich countries. It helps to attain those goals by promoting rights at work, encouraging opportunities for decent employment, enhancing social protection and strengthening dialogue on work-related issues. The ILO is the international meeting place for the world of work. We are the experts on work and employment and particularly on the critical role that these issues play in bringing about economic development and progress. At the heart of our mission is helping countries build the institutions that are the bulwarks of democracy and to help them become accountable to the people. The ILO formulates international labour standards in the form of Conventions and Recommendations setting minimum standards of basic labour rights: freedom of association, the right to organize, collective bargaining, abolition of forced labour, equality of opportunity and treatment and other standards addressing conditions across the entire spectrum of work-related issues.

Type of business with building Type of business with building - If you owned a building and Wal-Mart was opening its doors across the street in a previously unoccupied area (along with 12-14 small shops), what type of business would you start? Here are the considerations: 1. Money is a non-factor 2. Building is fairly large (10,000) square feet 3. Building is on the corner of a busy intersection (about to get much busier)
Re: What is Your Favorite Thing About Owning A Business? Re: What is Your Favorite Thing About Owning A Business? - [quote="freddyb45":1t3lpfi8]For me it's the fact that all the time and effort you put in is worth a lot more, due to it making you "business" more profitable. Working for yourself is also a positive, although employing people you can trust is quite different.[/quote:1t3lpfi8] I like this idea. Working for yourself means you are investing in your own future, not someone else's, although there is value in working for someone else first to gain experience and confidence. Working for yourself does not automatically mean success, fame and fortune. For most entrepreneurs, it takes much work and dedication to get to the point of financial success and comfort - sometimes years. But the benefit is, again, you know you are investing in yourself and building equity for your own future. GT :-]
Setting a Budget For Professional Development Setting a Budget For Professional Development - Hi Louis - I think a big challenge is that many entrepreneurs don't set a budget for professional development. It's usually something companies will look at as they hire people and use as a staff retention & development tool but it's not usually the case that you'll find an entrepreneur sets a professional development budget for themselves.
Re: Google Local Tutorial - Free Online Advertising Re: Google Local Tutorial - Free Online Advertising - Hi GT, Thanks a lot for the referral. I have started signing up all my clients for Google Local. People are amazed that in two weeks they can have #1 listings for competitive local kewords. Tip: Don't stop by adding just one ad. As long as each page of your website is different and optimized for different keywords you should create multiple ad words for each page. Example: Type in "Minneapolis web development" in Google. You will notice we have two listings. One for our home page & one for our mission page. They are both optimized for "Minneapolis web development" so Google will approve both listings / ads. Jeff
Re: How can I promote my site? Re: How can I promote my site? - aside from the aforementioned 1) social networking and social bookmarking 2) search engine optimization and pay per click 3) forums I would recommend 4) use blogging and blog communities (wordpress, blogspot, xanga), not only this drives content, this improves SEO as well. actively commenting on other blogs will drive exposure to your own blog and website. 5) partnerships / cooperatives. why not find some other businesses with websites that might complement your own? while YouTube might be unrealistic at this point, why not look for sites who promote visual arts and visual artists?? (similar to DeviantArt) Be creative! Best of luck!
