Beyond Booked Solid by Michael Port
Beyond Booked Solid by Michael Port
I've written a number of business management books and I ran a wide variety of businesses for twenty years. That is an interesting background to bring to any book for managers. Through the years, I've read many books on the topic of business management. So, I went into the book with the expectation that it would be similar to all those other business books I'd read. I'm very pleased to say that my expectations were way off base.
We’ve all seen many books about how to establish a business, how to build a business, how to promote a business and so on. But, how many books explain that just being busy isn’t enough? How many books help you to understand how to adjust your business systems as you become busier? Once the business is established and running – the owner and/or manager should be able to “have a life”. Sadly, many business owners don’t manage to have a satisfying personal life after their business "really takes off". That is one of the target audiences that I feel Michael Port attracts with this book.
From the beginning, I enjoyed the book and found many familiar points. There were many things mentioned in the book that I know for a fact – do work. There were points in the book where Michael Port was very clear that if the reader didn't follow his instructions, they simply would not move their business forward. That is blunt and to the point, and it is true. I had to smile as I remembered times I told that to business owners I worked with or business partners who refused to make necessary changes. Learning these points is easily worth the cost of the book.
How many self help or other books have you read that you feel like the author is talking “down” to you or preaching to you? I’ve read too many of those, but this is definitely not that type of book. The author showed a good sense of humor throughout the book and the style was very conversational.
Some of my favorite topics included:
• preparing for the future
• being creative (my favorite section)
• building blocks for business
• measure your objectives
• how to get things done
• how to develop business systems (one of the best pieces I've read on this topic)
• how to hire and outsource
• building alliances and partnerships
• creating balance in your life
In the last chapter, Michael Port included personal experiences from a variety of business people that showed what is possible. These examples start with a simple business idea and show how those ideas can be built into something much bigger and more successful.
I highly recommend this book for any business owner and/or manager who is working in a busy business, but wants to take it to the next level. It’s very easy to be overwhelmed in business and when trying to maintain a personal life when a business grows. Apply the many invaluable tips and suggestions that the author shares with you and your business and your life will improve. I will definitely keep my eyes open for the next book by Michael Port.

Recently I was contacted to read and review Beyond Booked Solid: Your Business, Your Life, Your Way Its All Inside by Michael Port. This is the next book in the "Booked Solid" series. The first book is titled Book Yourself Solid: The Fastest, Easiest, and Most Reliable System for Getting More Clients Than You Can Handle Even if You Hate Marketing and Selling.
