Choosing which Photo Editing Software is right for You
A few months ago I became overwhelmed with the urge to buy a photo editing software program to make my poor photography skills seem more professional, thereby eliminating the need to hire actual professionals. After several hours of internet surfing and review reading, I decided that photo-shopping my poor pictures was not a cure-all. I realized that even a half-way decent program is not the best way get around my lack of skills.
In my opinion, there is no cure all. If you want good pictures, buy a good camera and take a photography class. If you want awesome pictures, get a camera, take a class and buy software.
There are several places that offer photography classes for affordable prices, a good place to start is an online college or your local community college. These colleges may also offer classes in photo editing and photo-manipulation that will put you more in touch with the sorts of programs you are interested in procuring.
Now, once you feel comfortable in your photography skills, you will need to decide what level of awesome you want for your pictures. Software, like everything else in life, falls under the rule, “you get what you pay for” If you are definitely looking to take up photography as a profession you will want to spend a larger amount of money to get a better program. On the other hand, if you want to spruce up your photos of your kids at Christmas and get rid of the evil red eye look, it is ok to get a cheaper program.
There are a few free Photo editing software programs that you can download off the internet including Picasa, from Google. I feel that the free program (Windows Photo Gallery) that came with my computer works just as well.
There are also cheap programs running between $40 and $200 which offer a few more options for a little more price. Some of the features include layering, editing, organization and such. This is the type of program that I would personally recommend to most people who are shopping programs.
Then there are some very pricey programs which cost a bit more than a pretty penny. I would personally not purchase one of these programs unless I ran a photography business or was a photography artist who did a lot of photo-shopping. They have some very cool features and produce very interesting results. The problem with several of these programs is that you have to be very technically minded and able to navigate complex menus and technical terminology.
All in all, make sure you weigh your options very carefully so that you don’t end up with a program that does not meet your needs, or one that exceeds them so entirely that you can’t figure it out with the help of the instruction manual and a college professor.
Reading the product reviews and the descriptions of features included is a great place to start, but remembering to keep your budget and needs in mind is definitely important.
