Designing Web Sites for New Computers
Computers have the same basic components they have had for over twenty years. However, there are new ways to design a website to take advantage of these innovations. These innovations can bring new depth and innovation to web design. Staying on top of current trends separates an average web site from a great website.
One of the current innovations is high definition and wide screen monitors. With 1080p becoming the new norm, web design should be able to maximize this high definition experience. The colors are more vibrant and screens are larger and especially wider, but what can good web designers do to maximize this?
One of the primary things web designers can do is colors and gradation. Within a design philosophy there is generally a color scheme. This can be taken to gradations to give a more immersive experience than previous resolutions could allow. For instance, if there are several tabs within a website one can use to navigate, why not try a gradation, most current tab being the most saturated, and the previous tab the next most saturated, etc. This can help web browsers both navigate the site, as well as give a more professional feel to a site, rather than a set of links on can click on for browsing.
This can be especially interesting if there is a background. The color scheme of a background can be enhanced through gradations of tabs, unifying the web browsing experience. This is of course a ground up approach for designing a website around high definition monitors.
A second idea, because computers have so much of our lives on them, it might be nice to have a highly customizable appearance for a website. Imagine if web browsers could use pictures either from personal files or from the internet itself, to put their own pictures as back grounds. Some of this has been played with to a small extent on websites such as Myspace.com where html coding can be used to add graphics to a home page, making it feel more personalized.
Imagine the potential impact from such a feature on shopping websites. This would help people devote more time to a shopping website than shopping alone, giving a personal touch to what can be an otherwise impersonal experience.
Last week I talked about using a three dimensional picture as a main web page, and the idea has plenty of room for expansion. Consider this, suppose you had an Idea for an online store for your brick and mortar store. You could take several dozen pictures of the store, and present those pictures in high definition as your web page, with listings for various things in the store where they would normally go.
This simple idea could help even further bridge the gap between online and brick and mortar stores, giving customers an even more intimate feel from a website. When all is said and done, the idea is to get as many people to buy what you are selling as is possible. So remember, people shop where they are comfortable.
