So Much Can be in a Logo Design
There is so much that be in a logo. A log doesn't even have to have letters or words if it is done right. Some very well known logos around different areas of the world are known on sight. The creators of these logos used their artistic talents and ingenuity to create logos with hidden meanings, but once the logos became known, the meanings were evident.
For example, a logo that was created to indicate the love of music was two notes, bent in a way to create what looks like a heart and a set of head phones, thus “love of music”. Another example is the logo for Hartford Whalers simple shows a large blue Whales tale on a white back ground, a white “H” underneath that blends into the background and a green “W” underneath that. No writing, an “H” for Hartford and a “W” and Whales tale for Whalers. How much more simpler can it get.
Its in the use of the imagination. People, especially those with artistic abilities can see something in nothing. They can see something in simple combinations that others would never imagine, yet the others can see it once the artist puts it together. Sometimes it seems so simple, we don't know why we didn't think of it ourselves.
Another example is a simple black box with a white film reel in the center. The three holes of the film reel are turned to appear as two eyes and a mouth, and the logo is for scary production house. It works really well, since the white reel looks almost ghost or skeletal like.
There are a million ways to express something. Not everyone looks at things the same way. Getting the right logo for your company may not even require your company name on it. It may be just a matter of finding the right combination of symbols and colors in the right arrangement. Then the advertising takes over until the symbol becomes representative of your company. From then on, that symbol is your branding.
Graphic designers take many courses just to be able to come up with small designs like those found on logos. It takes a lot of different courses for them to learn how to put the right components together to design the right icon for your logo. They use many different artistic techniques in creating these designs, including using the negative space to create the main focus of a logo.
Many large companies have become well known just by using a simple logo, and sticking with the main idea of that logo. For example, Walmart, BMV, Apple, Mercedes Benz, Nike, Google, Burger King, Pizza Hut, and MasterCard have all used some of the basics from their original logos when the changed their logos over time, enough that people still recognized the logos whenever they saw them.
Once a a company becomes known by its logo, changing it to something completely different can eventually bring the company down. Subtle changes along the way don't usually disturb the public too much, but if the logo is right to begin with, then it's best to stick with the main idea of that logo.
