Using Personal PR to Beat off the Competition to a High Level Job

In the current economic climate, using personal PR to secure a high level job has become more important than ever, given the high numbers of applicants for each post.

How do you go about positioning yourself with personal PR in order to fend off the competition for a role you really want?

Read on below to discover our step-by-step guide to using personal PR to give yourself the best opportunity of being successful in your job hunt.

Think of yourself as a business

First of all you need to think of yourself as a business. Rather than being a company focusing on getting media attention, you’re an individual looking to get noticed by potential employers; the principles are the same though.

You need to put yourself in the places where your target market is looking. For example, attending a local networking event or business conference could put you in front of the right people.

Embrace social media

Social media sites such as Twitter and LinkedIn are used by many influential people across a wide range of industry sectors. Setting up an account on these sites is a great way to promote your own knowledge, perhaps by providing links to blog posts you’ve written.

Who you surround yourself with on these sites is also a good personal PR tool. For instance if someone looks at your profile and sees you’re connected to or followed by some key industry figures, it will give you more personal kudos.

It’s important to keep any personal and professional social media accounts completely separate in order not to jeopardise the work you’ve put into your personal PR.

Article writing

Another way to get in front of the people who matter is to write articles for leading industry publications and websites. If you’re not comfortable doing this yourself you can always get a copywriter to do it on your behalf or cast an expert eye over what you’ve written.

Going into an interview with a portfolio of press cuttings in your name or printed articles from websites will definitely put you in a position of strength.

Presentation

Going back to the original point about thinking of yourself as a business, consistency of presentation is critical to your personal PR campaign.

Your tone of voice, way you dress & talk and the language you use should all be as consistent as possible. Don’t think of yourself as just another job candidate, have a clear focus on who you are and what you represent and carry this through all your communications.

Google yourself

More and more employers are using search engines such as Google to look up potential employees. If you Google your own name and find no results about you then don’t sit back and think that’s okay.

By taking a proactive approach and writing articles about yourself you may be able to populate the search engine results with positive stories rather than having no online presence.

If there is anything damaging about you on Google or the other search engines then you need to address this immediately. There are two ways of going about this; first of all if the content is untrue you should contact the site to have it removed as soon as possible.

Secondly, if the information is true but potentially damaging you need to mount a positive SEO campaign to effectively knock the damaging article off the first page of search results.

Follow these five steps to increase your chances of landing that high level job you’ve always wanted.

Re: How many nationalities are on the forum? Re: How many nationalities are on the forum? - Hi there, It is amazing the languages have come into the posts. Now Jude was asked, how many languages she speaks. Please, come and tell us. I speak English, German and French. German is my mother tongue. Some thirty years ago I spoke fluently French. Now English has taken that place and I can better understand French than speaking it. English is now my daily used language. German in second place. However, I never grasped the German grammar very much. Why? The Swiss German Dialect is nothing to be compared with High German. At that time hardly anybody wrote the Dialect. Today it is the 'in thing' to write the dialect. (Letters, stories etc) But we have to be able to read High German, because every book, newspaper etc is in High German. Finally, I guess there are a few more who can vote for their nationality.

Re: THE SECRET TO SUCCESS IS ALL IN YOUR HEAD...RIGHT NOW!!! Re: THE SECRET TO SUCCESS IS ALL IN YOUR HEAD...RIGHT NOW!!! - Hey Barry, [quote="Barry Sarner":ev3dumxj]"Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other one thing." - Abraham Lincoln WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THIS STATEMENT ???[/quote:ev3dumxj] It's true on two levels. Level 1 - Doing something for the first time to succeed. Level 2 - Coming back from failure and not resting until you've regained success. The scares maybe deep. The wounds tender to the touch. But it will always be man's resolve or lack there of that defines the limits he is willing to go to, to gain or regain succeed. Books, audios, videos, courses, seminars, webinars, & etc. are important and I can't get enough. But nothing can take the place of what a man must decide to do, deep down within himself, if he wants to succeed.
Re: Can someone explain Search engine optimization to me? Re: Can someone explain Search engine optimization to me? - Search Engine Optimization (SEO) could be compared to a big popularity contest: A High School Computer Geek and a High School Football Captain who are trying to promote a party. The computer geek tells everyone in school & even hands out 100's of flyers about his party Friday night...what happens? his friends end up showing up and a few new people...even the new people leave right away because it is not what they are looking for. The High School Football Captain ends up just telling a few good buddies, and within hours the entire school not only knows about it, but everyone wants to come, and everyone does come & stay. One defenition of "optimize is "To make as perfect or effective as possibe." How effective are your article marketing campaigns? Could you be distributing content (that is what search engines index) more effectively? In a perfect world, who would you want promoting your website, web pages, and web content? Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is determining this perfect & effective way to do this. Jeff
