Barrier to Growth: Is Change Stressing You Out? by W. Vito Montone, BrandU®

[NOTE: Some words in this article may have been disguised to avoid triggering sp*m filters.]

Change is on my mind. It is everywhere inside our own businesses. I mean EVERYWHERE. I recently remembered that I want it that way.

But... there are definitely times that I forget.

How do I forget you ask? Simply, I let stress slip in. But that’s not change’s fault.

Somehow change has acquired a bad rep. We try to keep things calm, even, familiar...stress-free that’s the ticket. It’s all change’s fault. Right?

Let’s look some of the definitions of the word “change” that apply to business:

1. To cause to be different or undergo alteration 2. To lay aside, abandon, or leave for another 3. The act, process, or result of altering or modifying 4. A transformation or transition from one state, condition, or phase to another When you really take in these definitions, you realize why you should really want change. How could your business grow without undergoing alteration, modifying how it operates and transforming into your fullest vision for it?

Philosophers debate whether change is random or change is cyclical. Either way, I accept that change is a constant, period. Your business is either growing or shrinking. And growth, results from change. I don’t know about you I choose growth.

Reinventing the corporation is an expansive subject with over 1, 500,000 web pages devoted to it. You must master change to reinvent yourself and your business. Some companies swap leadership, some add free-wheeling internal entrepreneurial skunk squads to achieve a break-through.

Two versions of change made the Top 30 Golden Rules in the magazine Business 2.0. Ed Zander of Motorola says, “look for ways to break your business” (change it); Alex Bogusky of Cripsin, Porter & Bogusky says, “Reinvent Yourself. Repeat.”

Sounds stressful? RE-invent, break, even the “c” in change feels harsh. The clashing of things constant and things different can feel stress-like. However, it is not change that causes stress. It is our ability to lead through it; yourself and others.

Here are four ways to take that step:

• Understand the Conditions — Combat concerns, prevent limiting beliefs or fears from creeping into your experience by knowing the truth. Accept that change is constant. Take a thorough inventory of the conditions encompassing you and your business.

• Take Charge, Make Choices — Embrace change by actively looking for ways to change what you do. Don’t allow the chance for random change to happen to you, instead take charge and make decisions true to your brand AND your values. Undefined change is unknown and causes fear, to master it you must define it.

• Set Expectations with Clear Intentions — Understand that when your business grows, something will always go wrong. Don’t seek perfection; instead seek guidance and grace to make the best decisions each and every time. Document the corrective processes used to prevent repetitive conditions.

• Make Relationships a Top Priority — Grow with integrity and excellence. Everyone, including you, is important and valued. Communicate openly with your team; make clear requests that are true to the company and your needs. Touch your customers before, during and quickly whenever something doesn't go just right. Go to great lengths to make it right.

When one is being really truthful to one’s self, no one wants the same thing day in and day out. Treat yourself, your team and your customers honestly, openly and respectfully. Set your expectation that change is constant and master it. Be willing to make mistakes and fix anything that happens with grace and humility. Then you will have mastered change and you and your business cannot help but grow... and grow...and grow.
