5 Pitfalls to Avoid with Your Website
5 Pitfalls to Avoid with Your Website
1. Use a dominant color or a distinctive palette, but avoid black backgrounds and too many colors that you create a dizzying specacle for the viewer. Also research has shown that it is difficult to read white copy against a dark background.
2. Use short, pithy copy, but say something. Too many website are full of jargon or don’t say anything at all. You website is your chance to sell, so sell, tell stories, give information that your prospects will be interested in. That’s why articles on business tips and case studies are so helpful.
3. Navigation, navigation, navigation. Avoid clever navigation ideas that people will have a hard time finding. We’ve seen navigation hidden in the most unlikely places. While it may be clever on the part of the web designer, if people can’t navigate your site easily, they will move one. Always make it easy to get back to the home page and get relevant information.
4. Use rich media sparingly or make it an option. People are busy and it will slow down too many of them, unless your target audience is tech savvy and has the latest computer. Some websites begin with an admonition: Don’t proceed further unless your computer has the latest edition of real player or other protocol. Not a very inviting way to begin a relationship with a prospect.
5. Don’t ignore meta tags. This is not the most creative aspect of web design, but if you don’t spend the time putting together all the possible key words that make sense in trying to locate your site, you will short change yourself and your fancy website will be for naught. if you want to turn up on the search, make sure you think of all the possible words and phrases people might use to get your site and register with the major search engines.
