10 Ideas To Help You Create A Vision Of Your Ideal Work life

If you use all these ideas you may find you come out with two visions. One would be a big vision of what you want for the world and one would be a vision of the work you want for yourself. Ideally they fit together. At first they may not. Some people will prefer to omit 2 and 3 for now and start with 4 or 5. In all cases you need to do step 1. Finding a vision takes a lot of quiet time!

1. Set aside an hour or two of time alone in a quiet place.

2. Close your eyes and think about how you want to change the world. Visions can be very big. You might have lots of ideas. Write them down.

3. If you own a business think about your business in relation to the changes you want to see in the world. If you are in a career or changing careers think about the job you have or the one you want in relation to the changes in the world you want to make. Is there an alignment?
Example: The way I want to change the world is to make it a place where everyone gets to do the work he or she is passionate about. My coaching business is designed to help people get more meaning out of the work that they do.

4. What are your strengths, skills, talents and passions? How can you use them to do your part in changing the world? Do your business or career ideas fit?

5. What are your values? How do you honor them and work with them to do your part in changing the world?

6. Write out a vision for your ideal job that is exactly what you want. It doesn’t have to be a job you recognize. It might just be a list of tasks you’d like to be doing. Does this job incorporate your values, strengths, skills and talents?

7. Use all your senses. Draw a picture of your vision for your ideal job. Cut out pictures from magazines to make a collage. Sit quietly and picture yourself working at what you really want to be doing. What does it feel like? Taste like? Smell like? What are the sounds you hear? Is there a musical theme? (You probably won’t have an answer to all of these. The purpose here is to have your own signal so that you can call up your vision easily to energize you.)

8. Know that this process is non-linear. (I’d prefer a clear step-by-step path but I don’t think there is one to get to a clear vision.) Treat the process as an experiment or puzzle. The pieces will eventually fit together and make sense. Trust that it will.

9. Carry a notebook with you and jot down ideas as they come up for you. Your vision will eventually evolve.

10. Use your vision even if it is incomplete to inspire you. If you are on the right track your intuition will tell you. How? You’ll feel enthusiasm around it in a way that energizes you. That is what having a vision is all about!!

Re: Great video on work-life balance Re: Great video on work-life balance - Hi Evan, Thanks for the video link on Work-life balance, I found Nigel’s presentation very enjoyable and his style kept your interest all the way thru. I must admit I saw a lot of myself in what’s wrong today and the only thing that was a bit unrealistic is when he said he took a year off work to discover more about family life. Other than that it was a great video and very thought provoking. There are some very basic things we can all do to look at life differently and value the right things before we are too old to make it happen. I suppose that is why so many of us want to work from home. regards, Mal.

Re: When do entrepreneurs retire, if ever? Re: When do entrepreneurs retire, if ever? - Why would you ever retire when you love what you are doing? Sell the business and start another one maybe - but retire - NEVER! You should all read, The 4 Hour Work Week - By Timothy Ferris. He talks about building your business so that you can take mini 'retirement's throughout your life, instead of saving it all up for when you are old. Great concept - what do you think??
Re: 4 Ways to Go From Employee to Entrepreneur Re: 4 Ways to Go From Employee to Entrepreneur - The situation that Wezi describes is more the norm than the exception. I have spoken to many "entrepreneurs-to-be" that have a desire to work for themselves but can't overcome the fear of making that critical leap. The truth of the matter is, if fear is preventing you from moving forward with your own business you need to overcome that fear first. To do this, try this exercise: 1. Write down as many detailed reasons why you are DISSATISFIED with remaining in your job until you retire. E.g., it won't let you achieve the lifestyle you desire; you are sick of commuting an hour each day; etc. 2. Write down in as much detail as possible your VISION of what your life will be like once you have your own business and you are fully engaged in it. Enjoy this step. 3. Create a list of the action steps you need to actually complete to get things rolling. What do you need to do first? Second? Third? Create a step by step plan. These three steps all work together to overcome any resistance you may feel towards making a major change in your career. If after these exercises, you are still too afraid, look at what you have written down. Chances are one of the three forces for change (dissatisfaction, vision, or first steps) are not yet strong enough to overcome your fear. Perhaps, once you really thought about it, things aren't really that bad in your current career, etc.... Hope this helps.
