Authenticity
Authenticity
Many of has have been admonished to "be ourselves," to speak with our own voice, to be authentic. And even though we desire a genuine experience of our own lives, we have sometimes found ourselves presenting ourselves to please others-- or making choices to please those around us. I believe this is because many of us do not know what it really means to be authentic. Does it mean global purposes and grand gestures? Does it mean finding our every action worthy of the newspaper? Does it mean slathering our big emotions around the globe?
Fortunately, No! But being authentic does mean revealing the details of our lives, in all their unattractiveness, and their glory. The recovering alcoholic, the selfish person grown compassionate, the check-out girl who loves her job... these are the people who inspire us day to day. Not because their lives are so grand, but because they stand up for the truth of what they do, and don't hide the details of how they got there.
Authentic people inspire us and make us feel better about ourselves. They can often express joy even in difficult situations, and share freely stories about their thoughts, their actions and what 'went wrong along the way.' They usually laugh about it too. This is because to be authentic is to know who we really are, deep down, and bring that all the way through to the surface for show and tell, every day.
Authenticity is not only a privilege to those who dare to explore themselves, but a necessity for a healthy world. Only you can fulfil your part impeccably, and that can only happen if you trust yourself deep down; that what is under there is good, good, good. One of the reasons we love the authentic folks in our lives, even if they have challenging habits or manner, is that they know this truth about themselves, and they spark that awareness in us. Do us the favor of being your true self too, warts and all, and share the details of what it means to have a life as a YOU!

A wise teacher once said "authenticity is in the details." What did he mean by that? And why is authenticity so desirable to begin with?
