Getting it Done

Written by: Elizabeth Mullen

Article Overview: Getting things done is a fine art that is often misunderstood. Many people spend time getting good at knowing why things should be done, or could be done, but few become artists at doing them. Yet these 'artists' are the ones who we learn about through history and the media, and are the ones who inspire us quietly in our daily lives. And yet everyone who walks the face of the earth gets at least something done, even if it is not notable. So what is the difference?

Getting it Done

Getting things done is a fine art that is often misunderstood.
Imagine being at a museum looking at the greatest paintings of all time. Nearly every one of them was a risk on the part of the artist. These great works were original, innovative, sometimes even considered irreverent. There were no paint-by-numbers to guide them, no external prompting, no "how-to" behind it. The artist simply made what they envisioned, and then went on to share the completed work with an audience.

The difference between 'doing life' and getting things done is this creativity. Determining what one wants to accomplish-- as different than what has been done before-- and executing that vision is what makes someone artful or ordinary. And taking the risk to act is what makes one an artist or merely an audience. There are how-to books and instructions prevalent on nearly every topic for every audience, yet how does one accomplish that which has NEVER been done before?

Whether you think you are creative or not, there are areas in your life right now where you too paint outside the lines; where you "get it done." Perhaps it is the way you cook, or raise your children, the way you organize your time, or wake up smiling.... You can discover where this area of artistry is for you by noticing where you take the most action.

When you focus your attention on these ways unique to you, you develop your creativity and hone your ability to accomplish things in all areas of your life. When you share this-- your 'master works'-- YOU get to experience yourself as the creative genius that you are. So take the risk to act on your ideas, complete your "works," and share your results freely. You are an artist with your own life, and you can get even your wildest dreams done.

What else would you do if you were willing to risk?
