Remember your resolutions from last year? How many of them were you planning on putting on this year's list?
If you are like most people, your resolution list includes goals and proclamations not quite realized from years past. Maybe you have once again decided to "finally lose 10 pounds," or "finally quit smoking," or "finally start your own business." Notice a pattern here? If you haven't done this thing in years past, what makes you think you will do it this year? Actually these types of "repeat" goals are what dilute your ability to follow through on your word, and make your goals impotent. They just don't feel good.
So what can you do? What is going to work THIS year? Isn't your intention worth a little power boost?!
Master business coach Jay Perry suggests throwing out all repeat goals, no matter how noble or "important." And instead replace your New Year's with only "Big Grin Goals." These are goals that make you smile right now, instantly. Does quitting smoking or "finally getting in shape" do that for you? Right. You get the picture.
Big Grin Goals work because they contain within them the "juice" to make you achieve them. They include your enthusiasm, and your happiness. They do not have any "shoulds" about them. They are all about you-- not about someone else. Big Grin goals may include elements of those floppy old weakling repeaters, but reworked in a whole new way: "This year I am going to climb Mount Fuji and yodel the whole way up!" If it makes you grin, it's a keeper!
So what are you going to do about those "finally, this year" goals? Thank them for making you feel like a procrastinating, lazy failure, and let them go. Then turn to your new list of "Big Grins," and sparkle up your 2002!
Keep going!
