An Uncertain Trumpet Makes Only Noise and Will Not Deliver Your Business Results
Blowing an uncertain trumpet makes only a noise and not beautiful music. Theodore Hesburgh noted this when he said: "It's got to be a vision you articulate clearly and forcefully on every occasion. You can't blow an uncertain trumpet."
This past week, I had the opportunity to talk and listen to various people and organizations engaged in the art of making loud almost ugly noise and not beautiful music. All of these individuals did not understand the necessity for having a clearly articulated vision statement.
A well-defined vision statement in any strategic planning process goes beyond words because it creates a picture that everyone can visualize. This mental image helps all stakeholders to stay focused on the desired results.
This necessary statement excites emotions. When people hear these spoken words, they have a strong, positive emotional reaction.
The words we think, hear and speak are directly connected to our ability to secure the desired business results. If the words have negative connotations, then people are not as willing to engage their efforts towards realizing that ending point on the horizon.
Years ago I read this Chinese Proverb:
"Vision without action is a day dream; action without vision is a nightmare."
After working with numerous clients, all I can add is there are a lot of folks living a nightmare every day with a lot of very ugly noise and are still clueless why they cannot secure their desired business results.
Stephen Jobs is quoted as saying "You need a well articulated vision that people can follow." To accomplish this, your vision statement requires these characteristics:
- Vivid
- Easy to understand
- Energizes
- Inspires Action
- Generative
- Focused Visualization
P.S. Vision statements are not a replacement for business results. They set the tone to ensure the desired results are achieved.
