How Do You Embrace Change: With Joy and Abundance or Misery and Scarcity?
Dealing with change is a challenge for most everyone. How you embrace that change will determine how you embrace life either positively or negatively. Learn how you can change your outlook and leave the negative conditioning for others.
Since Pavlov’s experiments, conditioning is accepted as one way to control or change behavior. From our earlier childhood years, we are condition to the word “No” because our parents want to keep us safe. As we grow into toddlers, the word No is combined with the word Do and now we hear the Don’ts such as Don’t write on the wall, Don’t talk to strangers, Don’t . . . – you fill in the blank.
All of this negative conditioning ultimately turns us from don’t children into can’t adults. I can’t to this or I can’t do that. What also happens with all of this negative conditioning is that we now have created a belief system (a thought process based upon our experiences) that supports misery over joy and scarcity over abundance.
Think about a recent event of good news or a great idea that you wished to share with a friend. Did your friend support you with unconditional positive words or did he or she make some statement with the infamous “but” or “that can’t be done!”?
Return to this morning when you awakened. Did you immediately smile and look forward to the day? Or, did you frown and want to return to the covers and hide away from the rest of the world because you knew the day was just going to be another one of those days?
Many people look at each day as to what is going to go wrong and not what is going to go right or what is right. Rainy days even when it hasn’t rained in weeks are looked as depressing and negative instead of sustaining and positive.
When they are asked a question, inside they immediately react with another negative feeling from being overworked to over stressed. These individuals readily embrace misery and scarcity over joy and abundance every day of their lives.
Until we accept that we have all been negatively conditioned and that we can change that conditioning, we are probably doomed to a life where misery reigns supreme. Fortunately for me, I was able to reverse this trend and appreciate even the wettest and coldest days along with the days when 50% of my appointments are canceled or the car had an expensive major breakdown.
Maybe you are wondering: How have I managed this miraculous change? It truly isn’t a miracle, but rather a work in progress that began by identifying and then changing my beliefs. These changes included very personal ones that had been with me for decades. HINT: Sometimes it is really hard to let go of misery.
Also, I started writing and carrying belief statements or what others call positive affirmation statements. I made sure that my environment was positive and that entailed removing negative people from my immediate space.
Finally, I recognized what I could control, what I could influence and what I could not control. This last act probably had the most long-term significance. For what I have learned from my own experiences and within my coaching practice, is that people focus more of their energies on what they cannot control. This focus has a lot to do with their beliefs based upon their negative conditioning. However by redirecting my focus to what I can control and what I can influence, I have experienced incredible results.
The other night I watched the movie Forest Gump for probably the 10th time. One of my favorite lines in that movie is Mrs. Gump’s insight into life being “like a box of chocolates, never know what you’re gonna get.” You can look at each piece of chocolate in that candy box as a change within your life and not knowing what is going to happen until you take a bite. The choice is yours on how you will deal with that change. For me, looking for the joy and abundance is a far better choice that misery and scarcity.
