How the Long Tail Can Be Your Best Marketing Friend in Getting Customers

The Long Tail was originally described by Chris Anderson, editor and chief of Wired Magazine about selling and distribution. Now it appears the same behavior is happening in on-line marketing through the use of on-line key search words with the goal of getting customers. ComScore in a blog posting discussed Facebook and how it is being used as a search engine. What was really interesting was some facts about on-line key words searches where longer phrases are being used to find information (think your products or services) on the Internet. For example, no longer are people using “shoes” as a key word, but are being much more specific. Go figure given there are over 200 million websites, this only makes sense with time being one of those non-renewable resources. Key word searches have gone from 2.89 words in September of 2008 to almost 3.2 in March of 2010. What this means for you is to do some additional keyword research and include longer key words phrases in all of your on-line marketing copy. The end result of this action is getting customers becomes easier. Specificity or niche marketing is probably one of the best ways for you to be the Red Jacket in a sea of gray suits. This strategy can also be used in your blogging and even micro blogging based upon the key word phrase you discover. The other benefit is using longer key words searches is you may be truly reaching your target market through your potential ideal customer profile because of this specificity. And this is long tail in action.
