How to Change the Leadership Myth

A lot is written about leadership and continues to be written about leadership. Most will agree that leadership is a primary factor in the success of organizations and individuals from small businesses to entrepreneurs. Developing effective leaders is an ongoing goal for many education and training departments both in the public and private sectors.

Unfortunately within much of these published works as well as seminars and training programs, the myth continues that leaders are born not made. This is undoubtedly absolute HOGWASH and insults all that have achieved success when others with far more "born advantages" have failed.

Leaders are made and not born! This is a fact. Our country continues to be one of the best environments for providing opportunities for leaders to be made. The following is exemplifies how leaders are truly made.

He failed in business.

He was defeated in the legislature.

He failed in business again.

He was elected to state legislature.

He was defeated as speaker for the legislature.

He was defeated for elector.

He lost a race for U.S. Congressional seat.

He gained a seat in Congress.

He lost that seat in Congress.

He lost a race for U.S. Senator.

He ran for Vice-President and lost.

He ran again for U.S. Senator and lost.

He was elected 16th President of the United States of America.

Over 100 years ago, Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, believed that leaders are made, not born when he penned this words: "That some achieve great success, is proof to all that others can achieve it as well."

To change this leadership myth begins with embracing the belief that everyone has the potential to be a leader. Then each individual needs to reaffirm that belief through a positive self-affirmation statement or what I now call a "belief affirmation" beginning with this one. "I am a leader, first of myself, and then of others."

Why does this myth continue that leaders are born not made and more importantly why do people pay to hear this myth? Possibly, this is because those who perpetuate this myth don't want the average individual to see herself or himself as a leader who can ultimately achieved success in spite of failure upon failure.

Is The E-Myth The Ultimate Franchise Guide? Is The E-Myth The Ultimate Franchise Guide? - Ever since the E-Myth made its way through to becoming one of the most popular books for entrepreneurs, the number of small business owners who have come to me discussing franchising has exploded. Is the E-Myth the reason why so many companies are now looking at franchising their business model? Are there any other resources you can suggest for new franchise owners or people considering it as an option?
E-Myth? What's That? E-Myth? What's That? - I second FranchiseBrief... What's the E-Myth? I've never heard of it, although I feel stupid saying so. Any insight available?
Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight - Hi Everyone, Gosh, I REALLY appreciate your concrete feedback. This was far more than I expected and I'm glad you said what you thought straight out. Each of you have shared something of value and I want to take some more time to think and really go over what each of you have said. However, I can see there are some things I need to change right away. What an interesting point about a NEW program perhaps making people think they are guinea pigs! This is NOT what I want to convey! It's funny how we can see some things so clearly in others while not always seeing it for ourselves! I must admit there are a few things I've been meaning to change (like my bio which is very outdated). Obviously, these things need to be higher on my priority list. You caught me like the plumber who puts his clients first and doesn't get around to fixing his own tap! As far as my target market, I do feel quite strongly about working with Women Leaders and doing Leadership Coaching with them. It's non-negotiable in my books. In my Executive Coaching training, the terms "Leaders" and "Executives" are interchangable. To me, an Executive is a Leader and so is the Business Woman or Entrepreneur who is CEO of her own business. I love working with decision makers! What I did learn is that I need to avoid opening up the Leadership term beyond what I described above. I'm also wondering if there is a misunderstanding with the general public as to what Leadership Coaching really is. Leadership Coaching is all about developing your leadership skills, both as a people manager and in more effectively running and growing the business. There is ALWAYS room for growth in some way. As well, sometimes, we just need a sounding board to clarify what our next BEST step is. In fact, if a woman thinks she has nothing to work on, then we aren't a good Client/Coach fit anyway. How can she grow if she doesn't see the value of expressing ALL of the great ability within her? How can her company grow if she doesn't see the value of strategic planning for the next best level? Thanks again to you all! I will go back to my website and really question whether I am conveying the right message. I got more than I bargained for in this Spotlight... you generously offered way more than I was asking. I think we could be on to something great for the Forum. Now it's time to let someone else have the spotlight. It would be great if everyone took a turn! In gratitude, Tami
Franchise Models Franchise Models - There's a really interesting book about franchise models. Written by Michael Gerber, 'The E-Myth' is all about setting up an individual business and creating it in a franchise mold which will enable it's success. Definitely worth a read.
