Why Do Kids Sell Better Than Adults?

How come as a kid you could sell your parents on almost anything? Now you are having trouble selling your customers on your products and services even though you know they need them. So what gives?

The answer to this question is not just one thing, but rather a combination of things that are keeping you from your goal to sell more and consequently to increase sales.

One different thing between then and now is the relationship between the seller and buyer. In many cases, sales professionals have not invested the time to build the relationship. One of my colleagues just secured a significant contract with a company she had known for years. Over time, she consistently worked on building the relationship with the CEO and several board members.

Relationships selling is developed from a point of mutual trust and respect. Even if you have known someone for a long time, knowing will not necessarily translate into a deeper relationship. Your credibility emanates your daily behaviors and not just your sales behaviors. This is why it is so important to have a written values statement about those negotiable behaviors you will demonstrate 24/7/365.

Intertwined within the relationship is this key word assumption. Between children and parents there are an underlying assumptions. What assumptions are present between you and that potential customer (a.k.a. prospect)? Just because you know him or her and have built a relationship does not automatically translate into being the first person on his or her buying radar list.

Assumptions lead to this other thing called value. As a sales professional you still must demonstrate value your products and services bring to the potential client. The better you can demonstrate this value, the greater likelihood in achieving your goal to increase sales. Parents and children for the most part have value built into their relationship.

Another reason why kids sell better than adults is because they employ simplicity. There aren’t any fancy PowerPoint presentations or glitzy 4 color brochures. By using simple words reinforced with authentic body language and emotions, the child can make just the word Please sound like a command, a plea and a word of gratitude simultaneously.

So if you wish to increase sales (who doesn't?), then determine if you need to reassess the child within you.

Re: Is it better to become an entrepreneur at an early age? Re: Is it better to become an entrepreneur at an early age? - The younger you are the better you are at learning. I just posted a new thread that one of our teams won 2nd place at the FLL competition. these kids are at age 11-12, and they learned most of the skills by themselves. They know how to read and write in English. Kids in Israel just start learning English at the age of 10. They learned programing skills, etc. One of the kids learn how to use the Gimp program in one hour! That was amazing, all he knew before is how to work with windows' paint, and I downloaded gimp and he made posters for the team. This is why there are many schools for 3 years old, teaching them English and math. To answer you question, Kevin, I thing young is good, after you learn different skills, you can start at an early age. Kids in my country have a little advantage, they have to go to the army for 2 years, this experience is preparing you to life, and you have to mature early. And the best thing about it the early retirement too. A good entrepreneur will be able to retire early, this is everyones dream.
Your advantage over others Your advantage over others - Sell using your USP - unique selling proposition. Why should people buy from you, instead of your competitors? Think about it, why are you so great? It may be a hard question, but finding the answer can multiply the effectiveness of any advertising or marketing activities you undertake.
Re: How did we Live before Electricity Re: How did we Live before Electricity - Hi Michelle, It's hard for us to think about life without electricity, like the Kids today can imagine their lives without a mobile phone. I do remember years we didn't have to use heaters and air conditioners. 2 days ago it was so hot here I couldn't breath. In my country the electric company is now paying to those who install solar panels an reduce the use of electricity. It is still very expensive, many still thinking if it worth it when think on the money they are going to spend, but if you think about the global worming, that we caused be cause we use electricity, I think it worth it.
Re: When do entrepreneurs retire, if ever? Re: When do entrepreneurs retire, if ever? - Why would you ever retire when you love what you are doing? Sell the business and start another one maybe - but retire - NEVER! You should all read, The 4 Hour Work Week - By Timothy Ferris. He talks about building your business so that you can take mini 'retirement's throughout your life, instead of saving it all up for when you are old. Great concept - what do you think??
