Search Engine Optimization for Your Small Business Website

SEO is a system that is used to make your website attractive to the search engines. It helps your website get a higher ranking so that when someone does a search on the keywords that you’ve chosen, your website hopefully comes up in the first few pages of search results.

The advantages of this are obvious. Suppose you’ve chosen the keyword phrase “career coach” and you’ve optimized your webpage for that term. You’ve worked on SEO for your webpage and it comes up on page one of Google. Depending on how many people search for that phrase you could see a huge stream of free qualified traffic to your site.

In simple terms, SEO includes inserting keywords in strategic places in your website content and metatags and building lots of links from other relevant websites to yours. This link building is an ongoing project, so even if you outsource SEO, you can always be finding new places to create inbound links to your website. An inbound link is when another site links to you but you don’t link to them. A reciprocal link is when you exchange links, and this is also looked on positively by the search engines, although a bit less so.

The reason is this. If a relevant website, especially one with lots of traffic, thinks enough of your site to provide a link to it with nothing in return, your site must be of value. That’s the kind of website the search engines want to tell web surfers about.

SEO can drive significant traffic to your website, but it probably won’t account for more than 50% or your traffic potential. The rest will come from sources like online marketing and other links.

Here’s a simple list of what you need to do to increase your Search Engine Optimization

1. Analytics –extensive keyword research to find out
a. what terms people are using to search for your type of products
b. how many searches are done monthly for those terms
c. which keywords will work on each page of your website
d. which terms are the least competitive, as your chance of high rankings increases on less competitive terms.
2. Copywriting – Copywriting is a key element of SEO. It’s also a key factor in converting the traffic you get into paying customers. Your content needs to be written to attract the search engines and to attract customers.
3. Metatags – the language hidden behind your website needs to be optimized. Your main keywords for each page need to appear in that page’s Title, Description and Keyword metatags.
4. Submission – each optimized webpage needs to be submitted to the search engines.
5. Links – develop and implement a linking program so you’re always creating new inbound and reciprocal links.

One final consideration is that the search engines love fresh content. So installing a blog on your website, updating it regularly and assigning relevant keywords to each post will help you impress the search engines as well.

Re: Can someone explain Search engine optimization to me? Re: Can someone explain Search engine optimization to me? - Search Engine Optimization (SEO) could be compared to a big popularity contest: A High School Computer Geek and a High School Football Captain who are trying to promote a party. The computer geek tells everyone in school & even hands out 100's of flyers about his party Friday night...what happens? his friends end up showing up and a few new people...even the new people leave right away because it is not what they are looking for. The High School Football Captain ends up just telling a few good buddies, and within hours the entire school not only knows about it, but everyone wants to come, and everyone does come & stay. One defenition of "optimize is "To make as perfect or effective as possibe." How effective are your article marketing campaigns? Could you be distributing content (that is what search engines index) more effectively? In a perfect world, who would you want promoting your website, web pages, and web content? Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is determining this perfect & effective way to do this. Jeff
