Change can pose a real threat.
A lot of managers talk to me when their organizations are going through change, or when their teams are not performing at their best.
“How do I get this member of staff to see things my way?”
If you want to change them, you have to change yourself first. As a manager, how can you alter your own behaviour, so you become more honest and open? Sometimes you have to think back on how you manage. Maybe you need to put your own expectations to one side. Your own issues can go on hold, whilst you empower the staff member to change.
Talk to her. Rather than rescuing her when she makes a mistake, encourage her to take responsibility for her own actions. The report that was due in yesterday. Do not offer to finish it for her. Show her how she can do things differently to achieve the desired result.
“But I’ve told her so many times…”
Is this you? Do you become demanding, and frustrated? Stop. Look at the way you are communicating with your staff member. Come up with creative and positive ways of interacting. Perhaps she needs an appraisal. Or could you ask her what she needs from you?
This may be what is required to change your own behaviour. A lot of your actions will be instinctive. Until you ask an employee what you could do differently, you will not be able to improve your own performance.
Inefficiencies often reside in leaders, as well as staff members. If you really want to get the best out of someone you need to look within yourself. If you are performing at your best, so will the people around you.
By taking total ownership of who you are, you can then empower your team to ask the same questions. Don’t be frightened to raise this with your staff. “What are your thoughts about the leadership role?” Get them to assist in the transformation. This evokes a sense of confidence and more creative thinking in the team. They feel valued. They feel unique. Fresh ideas are stimulated within the team.
Get inside your head. Are the messages you give yourself good ones? Share your thoughts. Get feedback. Nurture the passion to improve and change. It is a positive thing.
A recent report by the The Gallup Organization show how company’s’ performance is helped by getting personal in the workplace. Productivity is increased, working relationships improve, and clients are more satisfied.
Work time becomes challenging and fun. Overall, quality picks up.
What comes at the end? Celebration. Pat yourself, and your staff, on the back. Every small step forward deserves acknowledgement.
