Want to be a millionaire?

Want to be a millionaire?

I would be a millionaire if I had a dollar for every time a client told me this was their aim.

When I ask my clients what they want to achieve in life it is often to have more money, or to have more time in their day. Admirable goals, but not as easy as they look. They’re hard to achieve first off.

I encourage my clients to focus on the short term, to avoid the frustration of feeling they are going round in circles. Long-term goals can seem too far away.

I focus on their needs and values in life. I ask questions like, “Why do you want to work towards that goal?” “Are you confident you will reach it?” “Have you carefully planned the route to your proposed destination?”

Together, we lay the foundations. Then they can begin to build the steps towards their desired result. We look at outside factors that may influence their progress. I encourage them to look at their peers, or famous people, who have succeeded. Is there a role model here? What characteristics did they have to enable them to succeed?

The clients I deal with have goals which vary enormously. It may be to improve their business, to lose weight, to stop smoking, or to mend a relationship with a partner. Together we hone in on the small, day to day steps necessary to progress towards their stated aim.

Currently, I am working with a company here in Adelaide. I was approached by a manager who had a difficult staff member. The ultimate goal was to help the staff member perform better.

We put into place an action plan of short-term goals for the staff member. My client realised she needed to improve her relationship with this staff member, and to offer her more support.

To help improve her performance my client set up a staff appraisal system, made sure her colleague fully understood her job description, and what was expected of her, and checked back with her on a weekly basis.

Unfortunately the staff member did not change. My client felt frustrated, and then deficient when she concluded the staff member had to move on.

In the end it worked out that everyone was better off. The staff member had been unhappy, and is now more fulfilled elsewhere. The business has become more efficient. Ultimately, the outcome, though difficult, was a positive one.
