5 Common Timewasters You Must Avoid
Gary has a business, employing 7 staff. When he contacted me he
was at a point where the stress from his business was so bad, that he
would constantly wake up 3 or 4 times a night worried about everything
...his cash flow, staff, lack of clients and the affect all this was
having on his personal well-being and family life.
He didn't
use a diary, had no way of planning and kept everything ‘in his The
Productivity and Profit Homestudy System head'. Often his staff were
idle because he hadn't spent time training them. That ensured the work
didn't get done therefore causing Gary to lose clients.
On top of that Gary was a perfectionist, he felt it was easier to
do things himself so they would be done ‘right'.
Being overweight didn't help either. He was constantly tired and
uptight causing him to be moody and also very negative. His family and
his staff would avoid him.
He was spiraling downhill quickly but luckily he realised before it
was too late, that it was time to get help otherwise he could lose
his business, his family and even his life!
Step by step and week by week Gary changed the way he organised
himself. He finally got control of his business and his life. He was
aware that he needed to change, was ready to change, found out what to
do and committed to making that happen.
Here's the top 5 time stealers that had originally encompassed Gary's
life and what he had to avoid and what you must avoid too...
1. Avoid using a diary and planning your time
With 50,000 plus
thoughts a day running through your brain you must write things down
otherwise you'll forget! Waste hours a week by not using a diary to plan
your day, your week and your month.
2. Avoid exercise and eating healthy food
This will guaranteed
that you'll feel tired, take much longer to get things done and get
sick more often. You are your most important investment, treat your body
like you would if you bought a brand new car.
3. Having no systems and being surrounded by clutter
The
paperwork is a mess on your desk, the filing is stashed away and you
can't easily find what you want. Working in chaos is a surefire way to
waste hours a week. According to a survey by ‘The Wall Street Journal',
the ‘average' white collar worker spends 6 weeks a year looking for
things. If you're like many business owners']);"> small business owners you're probably
working way too much and not having much of a life. Reduce your working
hours, your stress and save money by clearing out the clutter and
setting up simple systems to get things done more quickly.
4. Email, Telephones and Social Networking
Having no set times
allocated to answer emails, phones and do your social networking. It's
easy to let your time get consumed without you realising it. Create a
timetable for yourself.
5. Doing it all yourself
You're so good at bookkeeping,
running errands, packing orders, cleaning, fixing computers, maintaining
your website, writing your own newsletter, updating your database,
creating your own brochures, producing products and solving everyone
else's problems that there's no time to get anything else done.
Get
help so you can focus on the money-making activities.
The Final Word
Avoid these 5 common timewasters and you'll be amazed how much time
you'll have to work on improving your business so it runs much more
effectively and profitably giving you more time for your life.

interesting. Is anyone else here familiar with the FISH philosphy?

Congrats on the mention of your book! Hopefully it will drive up sales!
For myself, I don't really care for their acronym... MAGIC. Gives people the subtle impression that good things happen at the snap of a finger instead of lots of hard work!
Reality in Television
- [quote="SueB":2xhla35c]I've been watching Cashmere Mafia but not Lipstick Jungle.
What I like about CM is that these incredibly powerful and success business women are imperfect and older. Kudos to Hollywood for hiring 3 lead actresses who are actually 39-40 vs 25 playing older. The 4th is early-mid 30's.... I'm not sure how old the actresses were in Sex and the City when it aired...
Imperfect in that they do have challenges balancing the various aspects of their lives. Take Juliet for instance. She's this high-ranking if not head of some large company (I don't really know what she does) yet she let her husband take care of the money! She probably knows the cash flow particulars for her business though. Common error that many women make but that you wouldn't expect a power woman to make.
In this week's episode I thought it was rather interesting and perceptive of the Mia character to realize that her ex-fiancee Jack could only be with her if he was on the same level career-wise. Otherwise his self-esteem took a beating and he left. Her fear being that this is a pattern that would continue. Mind you, her character didn't do anything to support his self esteem when they were competing for the same position.
Just a few thoughts...[/quote:2xhla35c]
Interesting how they are incorporating real life mistakes that many women make and having their characters do the same things. You gave a couple of very good examples. I can't believe the people - male or female - who turn their paychecks over to their spouse or significant other and have no clue where it goes. I have an aunt that did that for 10+ years and then he husband left - with a large chunk of money she didn't know "they" had. Then she got married some years later and did it again. I wonder sometimes what it takes for people to learn a lesson.

Re: HOw to market a B2B consulting company
- How about providing a white paper on Common security holes (only mention the ones that the prospect can easily and inexpensively fix themselves). Towards the end explain that there are other greater security flaws that exist and that you provide a "Free Security Consultation and Report".
They could use this report to get cheaper quotes but you are getting so much more... you get face time with the company and get to build rapport with them.
I know of a company here in Toronto that does Energy Audits on your home and provide you with a report on ways you can save energy- they also also offer to fix it for you through their suppliers.
they had a story run on them on Earth Day this year and they were bombarded with over 200 calls in one day to have these audits done. The audits are done for free.
You could write up a shocking story on Security and holes that exist within businesses today and submit this story to the newspapers business edition or to a Trade Magazine written for the industry you are trying to serve. Most journalists may pick up this article and feature it or interview you directly.
Also, I would redesign your site to be more Information-based to educate potential prospects (how to solve common security issues) rather than it being all about the company - people are more interested in solving their problem and often aren't searching the internet for a particular company by name unless it is well established. So give them juicy information freely.
note: When I first heard this idea of giving away free information about solving a problem I was hesitant to use it in my web design business. I gave it a try anyways and the amazing part was that even the easy inexpensive things I advised them they could fix in their websites they offered to pay me to do it for them - from there I was able to upsell them on greater improvements. I've since sold this company - but it was fun!
7 Top Blog Design Tips
- Most blog platforms come with some basic blog designs. They may call them templates or themes or something similar, and usually they are not bad although some customisation is pretty common. I often see some common mistakes, and hopefully you will be able to avoid them.
1. Include an about page
Make it prominent and make it truly about you, not some resume-like page.If people find your blog and like what you have to say, they are going to want to know something about you.
2. Have contact information visible
An email or maybe even a phone number should be included. Your email can be displayed as a graphic to prevent spammers from harvesting it easily. I would suggest using an address that has your domain at the end to be more professional. e.g tyrone @ internetbusinesspath.com, rather than tyrone @ gmail.com.
Visible contact information will make you seem more real and although people may occasionally contact you, it will be far less often than you might think.
3. Include a picture of yourself
Blogs are personal, even business blogs, and people who visit yours will want to know what you look like. It’s also easier to built trust if your picture is visible. Though, you don’t absolutely need a picture, but it’s strongly recommended. Sometimes people might think you are hiding something if you don’t have one.
4. Show a top posts or articles page
Some of your blog posts are going to be much more popular than others (you may be surprised which ones they are). I call these your pillar articlesDon’t bury your pillar articles, your most popular blog posts. Highlight them somehow. You might for example have a top posts section in the titlebar or sidebar.
I have a most top articles section and I list my most popular posts based on the ones that are read the most. Other people do it slightly differently. For example, Brian Clark at copyblogger.com has a “Popular Articles” in his sidebar and under that he lists his most popular blog posts. Yaro Starak, on his blog Entrepreneurs-Journey, calls his most popular blog posts “Popular Articles” and lists them at the very top.Somehow or another highlight them. You might do something as simple as create a category called “most popular” and include popular blog posts in that category.
5. Don’t have a blog banner that is too big!
The banner is the top portion of your blog that goes across the top. It might have a picture of you there, the name of the blog, perhaps some graphic — they vary quite a bit.You don’t want your banner to be big. No one should need to scroll down to see your content. People decide really quickly when they first reach a Web Site, and that includes blogs, whether to read or to leave.
6. Create a visually appealing blog
Avoid bright colors. Stick to reasonable fonts like Times New Roman and Arial. Have someone with a good eye look at your blog, preferably a graphic designer. Everytime I start a blog and I’ve started dozens for myself, for friends, and for clients, I always get a graphic designer to at least look at it after I am done.
The problem is that it might look OK to you or me, probably neither having a particularly good eye nor appropriate training, but it still might look really ugly to others. Having a graphic designer take a quick look at it is good insurance.
7. Keep it simple silly!
Some blogs are just so busy: they have one, two, sometimes three sidebars just crammed full of all kinds of stuff. With some of it you wonder why is it there. What purpose does this serve? Now in my opinion calendars are a prime offender. What good is a calendar there? Some people like them, but to me they serve no purpose.
Empty space in a blog is not only allowable, but it’s a good thing. It helps focus eyes on what is important, which is your content and hopefully the few things you choose to put in your sidebar.
Most blogs start with a basic template which is then customised over time. These tips will hopefully help you that with customisation and help you avoid common mistakes with blog design.
