How Do I Know I am On the Right Path
How Do I Know I am On the Right Path
My friend Tom, a radio talk show host, recently had a wonderful guest on his show, Chuck Hillig, author of "Looking for God: Finding the Whole in One". After the show I asked Chuck the above question because so many of my clients ask it of me, and I ask it of myself sometimes.
How do I know if I'm doing the right thing in my life, because nothing seems to be going my way and because my life isn't easy right now?
Looking at this in a greater context, Chuck reminded me that this question assumes there is only one 'right' path to walk. If we believe there is only one 'right' path, then we are also assuming that there are many 'wrong' paths too. Given these odds, the chances are that most people are on one of those 'wrong' paths, including us. Right? Wrong! (or should I say, not true)
In truth, everything in your life is unfolding in perfect order. In Chuck's words, "Everything is on schedule. Any 'wrongness' you see in your current path does not make the path intrinsically wrong. It's so-called wrongness only comes from your expectations or demands about what 'should' be happening or unfolding on your path instead of what actually IS happening."
Even the 'right' road-to-happiness has it's bumps Dear Reader.
There is No Other Place to Be
Where you are now is perfect. Just look down at your feet and know this is where you are supposed to be. You are on your path now.
Let go of viewing the situation as troubled and let go of the attachment to how things 'should' be. As you become more trusting of life, you relax into it more and resist it less. The more you battle life, the more life will battle back.
Stop demanding that things go a certain way and have them be the way they are. Things will work out. In fact, things are working out now. If we can remember that things are happening for us rather than to us, we are on our way to feeling better. This means that no matter how painful or uncomfortable things may be, it is all there for our growth and edification.
Sometimes the road gets rough, but don't give up. You've got to keep on keepin' on.
Take care of yourself in this process. Ask yourself: "What can I learn and discover about me in this situation", and ask "how can I move forward in the most self-supporting way."
Chuck's final words to me were these "The paradox is that all of it is always OK. In fact, even if you think that it’s not OK, that’s still OK, too."
