Is there a part of your life that is currently dissatisfying to you? In the past things were fine and you were fine, but now you are not. Stated a little differently, the same relationship or situation that used to work for you no longer brings you the same feelings of contentment and fulfillment today.
What has happened is that your life has changed, grown and evolved over time, and so have you. On a day-to-day basis the small changes may have been hard to notice or may not have seemed significant. But over the course of time, it has become clear that what worked for you in the past no longer works now. Now it is time to catch up with that growth and make new decisions based on who you are and what you want today.
Think about your life as it is today for a moment. The way you did business one year ago could be different from the way you want to do business now. The people you used to enjoy spending your time with could be different from the friends you like to spend most of your time with today.
It Could Be Time for a Change
It is a good idea to move away from the things, situations and even relationships that no longer work for you or add to your life. If you have done everything you can do to make a situation better and this part of your life is still not working, rather than spend time and resources working on it, or spend energy worrying about it, you might choose to let it go. As you move forward in life, you may have to let go of things that used to mean a lot to you and move away from situations that had been significant to you at one time.
Rather than feel guilty or hold on to your old way of doing things, be willing to move away from projects or groups that are no longer fun, cut ties with people who are no longer healthy for you, and stop clinging to old ways of doing things and of living. Refocus on the new and the now and give yourself room to create and move. Just like when you weed-out a garden you can make room for new and better opportunities in your life...the ones that serve you best today.
Clinging to the Old and Out-Worn = Living in the Past Creating the New = Living in Today
Clear the Decks
Clearing the Decks means making room for what you truly want and creating space for good things to come into your life. This is a conscious and deliberate process where you get rid of things that drain you, drag you down, zap your energy, and no longer work for you.
Why do this? Do this because it will be hard for you to live a great life if it is already piled full of stuff that is not so great. And by getting rid of (or letting go of) the things that are not working, you will have more room for the things that help create a happier and better daily life.
Here is a place to start: identify and list what you are ready to let go of, move away from, cut out, eliminate, or delegate to others so you can fill the extra space with better things. This could mean letting go of an attitude, giving up a position or title, moving from a home you have grown out of, getting out of a job that does not reflect your abilities, delegating a task that no longer requires your attention, or cleaning out a closet quite literally. And again, just like when you weed-out a garden, you can make room at any time for new and better opportunities in your life ...the ones that serve you best today.
Identifying + Eliminating what is no longer working = Clearing the Decks
