A Managers Guide to Easy Project Management (EZA 24/10)

Getting the groundwork done for a particular project and then implementing the plans forged are the two major aspects of any project management program, and a manager has to make sure that they are in perfect balance.

When developing the skills of key people in the business, the learning must also cover associated topics like risk management, managing of available resources and creating a thorough work agenda, to ensure workers know how to handle situations and work efficiently on the project.

It's also important to understand the vital role that stakeholder management has in ensuring a successful outcome of the project as a whole.

Developing appropriate training can be relatively easy, utilizing the existing skills of people from within the organization to act as trainers, mentors and coaches. This not only has the advantage of being good value, it is also easy to incorporate, whilst avoiding the challenges found when outsiders specially bought in might have with internal company structure and language.

Internal trainers might also help participants feel at ease while learning. One of the key pitfalls of using internal trainers from a pool of expertise available is to ensure that the training given is of top quality and relevant, as well as having the ability to challenge too.

The other option is to hire one of the firms who specialize in giving such management training to companies, to ensure professional success. This is quite convenient for those who do not have the time or the means to build up an internal training program, but mind these can be quite heavy on the pocket, so decide wisely.

Project management, per se, can be complex or simple and whoever is creating a program that is of value to employees, needs to recognize that differing skill levels may well need varied approaches to ensure everyone has a good 'buy in' to the training, whilst ensuring complete novices have enough core information to get going quickly.

If formal training sessions are too difficult or costly to arrange, a good library of materials might be useful. There are plenty of relevant books, self-development and online programs available and these may often be adequate to get most learners progressing nicely.

So, for successful project management it's vital to make sure that you are utilizing a well-coordinated team. Throw in a few additional skill development activities like enhancing interpersonal relationship building, negotiation skills and team-building and there will be all the elements you need for a successful outcome.

Project management can be as simple as a plan on the back of an envelope. If you have a lot of resources to play with, of course there are software solutions too.

The first step in developing a suitable project management culture is to make a start. Recognizing the need to progress in this key planning tactic is the first step - after that there are solutions for anyone, in all shapes and sizes.
