Stakeholder Management - Unleashing The Wisdom Of Your People

When you start off on any venture, be it a project or activity that is clear and tangible, you need to understand everything that is needed to create a success. After all, it's much easier to understand the needs before you start, than try to second guess as the project rolls along. By having the people with the right skills onboard; the resources the project needs to ensure success and the right leadership that you will provide, many of the pre-requisites for success are in place already. These are the easiest to fit into place and are the positive side of the ledger.

Whilst it might sound defensive, knowing the people, organizations and other bodies that your work might impact on, is pretty important. Indeed not to know what you need to know would be naive, to say the least.

Many managers take the time to consider the implications on those outside the work you are doing and consider the consequences to success, making efforts to minimize these early on.

Within all the excitement of setting up a new project, it's important to make the time to understand the likely impacts of the activities and outcome you are going to be involved with. There will be people out there who will need to be swayed towards supporting you, rather than getting mad at you all.

Ideally, your stakeholders will be on your side, though this is certainly not always the case, as there so often is an easy alternative view that can be taken.

To get to understand who the stakeholders are, you need a heads-together activity with your team so that the details can be thrashed out; the stakeholder groups identified, together with their strengths, weaknesses and potential to be a challenge to the progress of whatever it is that you are doing.

Using a team helps because there will be different ideas, perspectives and experiences, generating very different viewpoints, all of which need to fit into the mix that will prepare your plan to manage stakeholders appropriately.

The members of your teams help you all understand what it is you need to be focusing on, when you start to consider how you can influence stakeholders to be as far on your side as possible.

Once your team have been engaged in the initial phases of thinking about just who will be out there, you might be surprised at who wants to have a further involvement as you go out to bring any errant stakeholders in line.

That means your team is evolving and growing in capability, as well as you having a far greater chance to make your project run smoothly.

By using the team in the first place a better picture of those with possible interests can be built. And it's great for team-building too!
